We've lived here in our Vermont hillside home for six years now, and I'd venture to say I've hiked the trail just down the road more than 1,000 times in that time and have never seen a bear. What I have seen (and heard), several times, is an older fellow hiking with bear bells jingling on hiking poll.
Each time I've seen the fellow I have to laugh to myself. First, because black bears – the kind who carried trash cans out of our garage when we lived on Moose Mountain – are actually pretty timid. And because, as I said, I've hiked that trail day after day, at all different times of the day, and have never seen a bear.
You know where this is going. Or maybe you don't.
No, I didn't see a bear on the trail. But Mrs. BGA, who hiked the trail for the first time by herself last week, actually did come across one up near the peak.
Bear bell guy was nowhere to be seen, but he might be interested to know that not only did the bear not scare Mrs. BGA, but she scared the bear. To her chagrin, while she was trying to get her phone to grab a picture, the bear spotted her and ran off.
