In The News

A story under the headline Omega Psi Phi re-establishes local chapter on campus after 31-year absence; The historically African-American fraternity has been in talks with administration to form a local chapter since last May details how running backs Q Jones and Joey Richmond as well as defensive back Cameron Maddox played key roles in the effort.

From the story (LINK):

Jones (said) that the reintroduction of Omega Psi Phi at the College is especially “important” as Ernest Everett Just, a Dartmouth valedictorian from the Class of 1907, was “denied” a valedictory address by the College for being Black.

“We thought that there needs to be men of Omega on campus because of that,” Jones said. “How does (a fraternity’)  founder go to a college, and yet that college does not have (the fraternity) on campus?”

As running backs it won't impact Q Jones and Joey Richmond, but as a defensive player Cameron Maddox should be happy about a change in offensive approach at West Point.

Dartmouth is slated to play at Army in September of 2024 and per a story in The Athletic, Maddox and Co. will not be charged with stopping the Academy's traditional triple-option offense. Per the story (found HERE behind a paywall):

(S)tarting this fall, Army’s opponents will no longer have to defend the under-center triple option. This spring, (coach Jeff) Monken is doing the unthinkable and moving his team to a primarily shotgun offense. He felt he didn’t have a choice in the wake of an under-the-radar NCAA rules change last year that eliminated blocking below the waist — known as cut blocking — anywhere but inside the tackle box.

And . . .

Monken says Army is “still gonna run it 50 times a game” and will still run option plays out of the shotgun, albeit without a fullback.

A couple of online postings take a look at the pro prospects of a pair Dartmouth grad transfers (although one has another year).

The Mid-American Conference SB Nation site has a workup on the Buffalo Bulls players hoping to get a shot and lists tight end Robbie Mangas '22 with a 4.89 time in the 40 from his pro day. From the story:

Probably translates into more of a true fullback role at the next level, though he could see utility as a H-back in the right level of play.

Pro Football Network calls Isaiah Johnson '22 "incredibly instinctive" and writes that he "was a terrific college cornerback the past three seasons, but he has the style to be moved inside to safety. His instincts, tenacity, and lack of speed fit well in a zone system." (LINK)

Johnson actually has a second year of eligibility at Syracuse and has become an interview favorite, speaking with the media each week during spring ball. To hear what he had to say a few days ago after a Week 4 practice with the Orange, click HERE

Speaking of Dartmouth alums, former Big Green captain Mike Rabil '06, has been named to Sports Journal's Forty Under 40 Class of 2023, which "exemplifies excellence in the industry. Their work and accomplishments are driving sports business to new heights." Rabil, along with his brother Paul – one of the all-time great college lacrosse players – is a founder of the Premier Lacrosse League.

Here he shares some thoughts with his staff:

Dartmouth announced yesterday that Adrienne Shibles has "stepped down" as women's basketball coach just two years after she arrived at the college after a successful stint at Division III Bowdoin. She finished just 5-49 overall and 2-26 in conference at Dartmouth, going winless in the Ivy League this winter (LINK).

If you've lived in Hanover for years as we did, it's easy to take this quintessential New England village for granted. Check out this video tour from last spring for a reminder of just how special the town and campus are:
