Get There Early!

If you are going to be at Memorial Field for today's situational intrasquad scrimmage, don't plan on arriving for the originally scheduled 4 p.m. start. According to coach Buddy Teevens, the banging could start between 3 and 3:15. ... Check Green Alert premium tonight for a full report.

It's still two weeks until Dartmouth kicks off the season against Colgate but the Raiders will be in action for the first time today, playing host to Albany on their new FieldTurf field. The big question in the preseason (for outsiders at least) was, Who will be the Colgate quarterback? If you can believe the game notes (trust me folks, you can't always) it will be Alex Relph, a 5-11, 196 junior, or Anthony Fucillo, a 6-2, 225 junior. That's right, the notes say "or." Relph completed 3-of-9 passes last year playing one half. Fucillo hasn't completed a college pass yet.

Harvard has sound and video up from its media day. (link) ... Princeton also had its media day. (link) ... It's safe to say the Dartmouth media luncheon was a little less high profile than these events ;-)

A Boston Herald roundup of Division II and III football in New England has a mention of former Dartmouth assistant Rob Talley, now the head coach at Stonehill. (link)

There isn't much open land around the Dartmouth campus. There's even less around the Penn campus but the school has managed to recycle some of it. Penn has announced as part of a major building project and land acquisition that, "14 acres of parking lots ... will be replaced by recreational and athletic space, as well as academic, cultural, commercial and residential buildings and a pedestrian bridge along Locust Walk through to Center City." The work is expected to be finished by 2010.

The Wall Street Journal has an editorial feature with trustee T.J. Rodgers under the subhead, "A cautionary tale about a businessman who ventured back into the Ivory Tower." There used to be something alums of the college loved to say (and perhaps still do): "It's different at Dartmouth." No kidding.

Not being an alum, this whole trustee thing baffles me. All I know is it is very unseemly.

If you want to see a little more hitting this weekend, the Dartmouth rugby team is hosting McGill and Queens Universities in its annual Dartmouth Classic preseason tournament at the gorgeous rugby complex on the Lyme Road opposite Hanover Country Club. Action starts at 10 Saturday with the last of four games beginning at 2. They are back out on Sunday with games running from 10 until the fourth and final one starts at 4.

And finally, that certain Hanover High sophomore started and played almost the entire game as her field hockey team opened the season with a 2-1 win.
