It happens every year and it always seems a little strange. The Dartmouth women's soccer and field hockey teams played regular-season games last Friday. That would be Aug. 31.
Men's soccer kicked off action at the beautiful new Whitey Burnham Field yesterday with an overtime loss to Massachusetts.
Football? That won't start until Sept. 15, more than two weeks after the women's soccer and field hockey teams opened play. One of the arguments against joining the rest of the world and scheduling an 11th game is there's nowhere to put it. Seems to me, once again, there's room at the front of the schedule.
Dartmouth safety Pete Pidermann gets a mention in this Miami Herald story about his Belen Jesuit high school sending players to the Ivy League. A sophomore, Pidermann is one of five Belen players in the Ivies this year. Classmates Fernando Aran and Carlos Roque are sophomores at Princeton, Gio Christodoulou is at Yale and Greg Fontela is at Columbia. Two more Belen grads finished Ivy careers last year while another three are currently hearing "from Ivy League schools like Dartmouth and Cornell," according to the story.
With quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and tailback Clifton Dawson of Harvard joining Nate Lawrie of Yale, the Cincinnati Bengals now have four former Ivy League football players in their ranks. Wait a minute. Fitzy, Dawson, Lawrie. That's three. Oh, right, the Cincinnati Enquirer notes at the end of this story that team president Mike Brown '57 was a Dartmouth quarterback.
Two things that shouldn't have surprised anyone: Colgate tailback Jordan Scott ran for 180 yards against Albany in the Raiders' season-opener Saturday. And he was named Patriot League offensive player of the week. (link)
Two things that should surprise you: Scott carried the ball 44 times. And his touchdown was the only one Colgate scored in a 13-11 win.
UNH moved up one spot to No. 5 in The Sports Network poll. Not bad considering the Wildcats didn't play. Yale also took advantage of the day off by moving up a spot to No. 23.
Check in tonight for a wrapup of today's Dartmouth practice.
