Anthony Gargiulo Update

Anthony Gargiulo '05 suffered a possible broken ankle on a what the Calgary Sun termed a "cheat shot," on the final play of the first half of yesterday's regular-season finale for the Calgary Stampeders against the BC Lions. From the Sun game story:
... (At) the end of the first half ... Lions right tackle Jason Jimenez laid a cheat shot on defensive lineman Anthony Gargiulo, taking him out from behind and targeting his ankles.

Although Jimenez was kicked out, it was little relief to the Stamps as Gargiulo was carted off.

"He was just helpless and couldn't do anything," said fellow Stamps lineman Terrence Patrick. "I feel bad for Anthony. That's so dirty. It was an unfair play."
Gargiulos' injury was also mentioned in a story that includes this:
The cheap shot upset B.C. quarterback Dave Dickenson.

"We don't want that," said Dickenson. "That situation didn't need to occur."

Before being injured Gargiulo had two tackles and a sack for the Stampeders, who dropped a 25-24 heartbreaker when a 45-yard field goal attempt to win the game at the gun hit the upright. (Columbia product Tad Crawford had one tackle for BC.)

Despite missing a number of games and being slowed by injury in others, Gargiulo finished the regular season with 21 tackles and five sacks. Calgary closed out the regular season 7-10-1 and will now play at Saskatchewan in the opening round of the playoffs.

Although he spent one year out of football and is wrapping up his first professional year, Gargiulo -- the Dartmouth record-holder with 25 career sacks -- is still just 22. He won't turn 23 until later this month.
