Add Another Recruit (Sort Of)

He'll be a sophomore next fall, but he might as well be listed with the recruits. Lane Shipley, a highly regarded, 6-foot-3, 265 freshman who missed all of last season after hurting his knee in the Colorado high school all-star game, will look to finally make a splash on the field next fall. Steamboat Pilot & Today had a nice story a while back about Shipley, who was recruited as a defensive end but is expected to move inside for the coming season. Don't be surprised if he makes an immediate impact.

The Post Tribune in Indiana has a story about Harvard quarterback recruit Alex Sarkisian of Valparaiso High School that is revealing. After the Crimson won a battle with Princeton and Penn for his services, Sarkisian told the paper:
"If there's one thing I really like about the Ivy League, it's that all the schools hate each other. There's so much competition, it's incredible."
And when he cancelled recruting trips to Princeton and Penn, Shipley said ...
"Some of the coaches got angry, and they questioned my manhood and said my word means nothing. It was hard. But it was no different than if they told me they were going to go in another direction with another player."
Ever heard of the appropriately nicknamed "Heavenly Gates?" He was a Dartmouth football player and I stumbled upon a story about him in the Nov. 14, 1938 Time Magazine.

The 90-minute trip up to Burlington, Vt., yesterday to string the UVM-Maryland Baltimore Country men's basketball game for the Baltimore Sun took 2 hours, 15 minutes because of icy road conditions, but it was well worth it. With scalpers selling tickets in the parking lot, the place was packed and rocking. An athletic UMBC team won a barn-burner, 75-73. Unfortunately, the Sun only gave me 450 or so words and there was a lot more to write about.

And finally, that certain Hanover High sophomore runs at states in Leverone Field House today. The top six between her Class I-M-S meet and the Class L meet advance to New Englands. If the seeds hold up, she should make it, but we'll see. It's been a tremendous season either way.

Oh, right. One more thing. As for the Super Bowl, I'll be shocked if the winner isn't ...

... Budweiser for best commercial. That may well be the highlight of the day.
