Gallagher Redux

Add John Gallagher, a 6-3, 230-pound tight end/linebacker from West Salem, Ore., to the list of Dartmouth recruits. Gallagher was an OSAA 6A all-state second team pick on both offense and defense last fall. The Statesman Journal blog reported his college choice this way:
West Salem’s John Gallagher has verbally committed to play at Dartmouth. The school, like all of the Ivy League members, doesn’t give athletic scholarships, but Gallagher is going to get a lot in academic scholarships.
A West Salem High School football page has some very interesting comments from Gallagher about his visit, and what appealed to him about Dartmouth. It's definitely worth checking out here. His comments reveal that either the Dartmouth coaches had a sense of humor or they had a nifty way of remembering his name because his host for the visit was ... freshman tight end Kevin Gallagher. ... This site refers to John Gallagher as, "an awesome beast of a kid," and another referred to him as a "speedy" tight end. ... For a stock action shot of Gallagher, click here.

As expected, the Brown Daily Herald has a story about 2007 grad Zak DeOssie going to the Super Bowl with the Giants. The story includes this:
Whether a devoted member of the Brady bandwagon or a Big Blue-booster, every Brunonian will have at least one player to root for on the football field this Sunday.
With apologies to those who love a very good school, I've always thought the nickname Bruno was borderline but Brunonian is over the top.

And finally, I went and saw some old friends last night at Colby-Sawyer College down in New London, N.H., about a half hour drive south of Hanover. When I was at the paper I regularly covered the Division III school's terrific men's and women's basketball teams and it was fun to catch up last night with their coaches and athletic director.

I thought about the coach of the Colby-Sawyer women's team this morning when I discovered Dartmouth would have two tight ends named Gallagher next year. That's nothing compared with what Colby-Sawyer coach George Martin is battling. On his roster he has players named Kayt, Kate, Katelyn, Kali, Krista, Kristi and Kristen. No "Kidding." (By the way, they won last night, improving Coach Martin's record at Colby-Sawyer to 276-99 and his conference mark to 145-21. Not bad.)
