The Boston Globe has a terrific story about Dartmouth quarterback Alex Jenny. You've got to love this lede:
One day last winter, during the holiday break, Alex Jenny sat down in his parents' Wayland home and watched one of the family's favorite home videos. Some people probably still think New Hampshire's 28-10 win over Army was an upset. They shouldn't. The scary thing about the game is that UNH actually outrushed the Cadets' triple-option attack, 184-169. UNH now has beaten Rutgers, Northwestern, Marshall and Army in a row. In a game story, UNH tailback Chad Kackert said:
"I was about 2 years old and wearing a Dartmouth sweater," recalled Jenny. "My dad asked me where I was going to college and my answer was 'Dartmouth.' " The toddler's sweater is now a fond memory. These days, Jenny wears No. 5 for the Big Green, and will step under center as the team's starting quarterback as a junior when Dartmouth opens its season at Colgate on Sept. 20.
"(Beating an FBS team) was a very strong point made by the coaches (Friday night). No team has ever beaten three straight (FBS) teams, let alone four. It's definitely a source of pride for us. It says a lot."In case you are wondering how RJ Toman did at quarterback for New Hampshire, he was a very efficient 12-of-17 for 138 yards with one interception. Find the UNH-Army box score here.
The good news for Dartmouth fans is that Holy Cross dropped its opener against Massachusetts. The bad news is the Crusaders also dropped 42 points on the Minutemen, losing 45-42 on a field goal at the end. (link) The Holy Cross defense wasn't stout, but No. 4 UMass is a pretty good team. Here's what Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph told the media:
"I wouldn't call it being encouraged, but we're going to learn from what we did. We know we can compete with anyone. They're a great team and we were right there with them until the very last second."Find the box score here.
Colgate will be playing at Coastal Carolina today and it will be interesting to see how that game turns out. The lede of the Myrtle Beach online advance may have said it best:
The Colgate team that fell to Stony Brook last week is not the same group that will travel to Brooks Stadium on Sunday.By the way, Stony Brook, which beat Colgate last week, fell yesterday to Elon, 30-20, in a deluge.
That's mainly because of Jordan Scott.
And finally, that certain Hanover High junior finished 11th yesterday to help the powerhouse Hanover girls cross country team win not just its own division but the overall championship at a big invitational race at Mount Washington. She had a good time and sounds as if she learned a lot about cross country and pacing herself in her first race after switching from field hockey this fall.
Amazingly, none of us have obligations today so we are skipping over to the seacoast to spend the day together. The forecast is 75 degrees and sunny at York Beach, so keep your fingers crossed.
