Working on previews from e-guides instead of the printed material is turning out to be über frustrating. I'll get the hang of it eventually, but here's a suggestion to designers of the guides: Make your table of contents very thorough. Believe me, it's a lot easier to flip through the pages of a printed guide than it is to run a guide up and down your computer screen looking for something. And while the "search" window is nice, if you search for the name of somewhat prominent player in an e-guide, the name will show up 30-40 times or more. Very frustrating. And no, I'm not going to spend $10-$15 per guide to get hard copies at the local print shop.
Kudos to the Patriot League for a very nice preseason guide available for download here. I've been politicking for for e-guides download links to be by the section and in their entirety, and the PL offered both.
According to ESPN.com, safety Ryan Silva of Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island either has Dartmouth on his radar or Dartmouth has him on its radar. Either way, if genes mean anything it's a good thing. Silva's older brother Jamie was a star safety at Boston College and then made it with the Indianapolis Colts. (NFL bio here) But it is another brother, Steve Silva, who should be most familiar to Dartmouth followers. The third-leading rusher in Holy Cross history, Steve Silva had 167 punt return yards and 353 all-purpose yards against Dartmouth in 2005, when he was a first-team All-American.
Not surprisingly, given his family history, Ryan Silva also has Holy Cross and Boston College on his list according to Rivals.com, which writes, "Jamie Silva's younger brother, Ryan, said Boston College is "absolutely" his top school but will the Eagles have room for him in their 2010 class?"
The Daily Dartmouth has a story about javelin standout and former Dartmouth junior varsity quarterback Sean Furey '04 heading to the, "International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Athletics." (World Championships link) The championships start tomorrow in Berlin, with javelin qualifying one week from today. Find Furey's information on the IAAF website here.
Curious about the backup quarterback who decided to transfer from New Hampshire to Trinity, was accepted, and instead opted to return to UNH? Me, too. The Seacoastonline.com site has a story.
Kevin Decker didn't have much in the way of stats last year as the top backup for RJ Toman, but Dartmouth got a sense of what he could do when he completed 5-of-7 passes for 52 yards and ran for 13 more against the Big Green.
And finally, double sessions have started at Hanover High School and with the temperature projected to possibly hit 90 degrees for the first time today, that certain sophomore-to-be isn't second-guessing his decision to play on the golf team this fall. It's was a difficult choice after playing tackle football since fourth grade, but when everybody else started to grow and he didn't, it became a little easier. ... His sister continues to train at the summer camp where she is a counselor this year. She'll miss the first week of cross country training with the powerhouse Hanover program while wrapping up her duties at the camp and then will join the team, which has its sights on at least winning the New England championship. She'll be taking a few "official" recruiting visits this fall as she tries to narrow down her college choices.
An aside: It is astonishing how much money colleges spend on sending printed materials off to "rising" high school seniors. And in some cases, we're talking about schools that you wouldn't think need to promote themselves.
