Outside Competition For Ivies

While Dartmouth was having an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, several other Ivies were working against outside competition.

Up in New Haven, Yale coach Tom Williams had this to say after his team handled Division III Union, 36-14:
"I was happy with all phases of our game today. We are right where we need to be. We had 11, 12 and 14-play drives, and that's a good sign for our stamina."
Cornell scrimmaged Division III Hobart with new quarterback Ben Ganter going 6-of-9 passing for 85 yards and fellow senior Stephen Liuzza grabbing two catches for 37 yards.

Penn scrimmaged Widener and there's a video report here. Sorry I can't tell give you anything out of the report but slow Internet plus video-only reports are beyond frustrating.

Dartmouth, of course, will play a "preseason game" against Harvard Friday on Memorial Field.

Penn, it has been widely reported, is putting a good deal of emphasis on the run game this fall. The Daily Pennsylvanian quotes offensive coordinator Jon McLaughlin:
Everything's going to be based on us being able to run the football. People look at this version of Penn offense and will say "Boy, this is a physical team that really can run the ball."
Back up in New Haven, the Yale Daily has a glowing look at camp under new coach Tom Williams. From a column:
Instead of sporadic, long and allegedly poorly organized practices, the new regime boasts a dependable, fast-paced and efficient schedule.
New Hampshire might have looked something less than a Juggernaut in a 24-14 win over St. Francis Saturday, but playing in place of starter Chad Kackert (out with a hamstring), Sean Jellison looked pretty good, rushing for 125 yards, added 24 receiving and scoring three touchdowns. Foster's has a story about the in-state product whose brother has been mentioned as a potential Dartmouth recruiting target.

How good is New Hampshire's conference? The Colonial Athletic Association played "up" in three games on the opening weekend and won them all. Richmond defeated Duke, 24-16. Villanova defeated Temple, 27-16. And most impressively, William & Mary knocked off Virginia, 26-14. This week UNH tries to win its fifth game against a BCS team in as many tries when it visits Ball State. The Wildcats have previously beaten Rutgers, Northwestern, Marshall and Army.

Extra Point
After Vermont's first-year Division III Castleton State team won its first-ever game against Anna Maria College, also playing its first game, the weekend sports reporter for our semi-local TV station got his history a little confused. Trying to be witty, he said Anna Maria was one of Columbus' ships. Turns out his math was a little off, too. He said the Anna Maria was one of CC's four ships. I'm not making this up.
