Pastoors is tied for the Ivy League lead in tackles after one game. Among other things, the Ivy League statistics after one week show: Foley Schmidt tops the Ancient Eight with two field goals and is tied for the lead in kick scoring with seven points; Mark Dwyer is tied for the conference lead with two sacks; Abuhoff leads in punt return average (22.0) and is a close second in kick return average (30.5).
Dartmouth alumni, family and friends are invited to a pregame celebration of food and fun with Chuck Goss '84 at The Powder Major's Farm, just five minutes from UNH's Cowell Stadium. The festivities start at 10 a.m. In addition to food and drink there will be "Closest to the Pin," and "Fewest Strokes to the Pin," contest on specially groomed fields to support Dartmouth football. No guarantees, but if he can shake free, Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens may also stop by for a very quick visit. The Powder Major's Farm is at 6 Cherry Lane, Madbury, NH. For more information, send me an email and I'll forward it directly to Chuck Goss (rather than put his email out there for some spam collector).
Speaking of the UNH game, the Laconia Citizen has a story that discusses the "hiatus" being taken in the series at the behest of Dartmouth. UNH Athletic Director Marty Scarano says:
"I'm disappointed we're not playing them in football, but I can certainly see their point of view. From their perspective, they want to get on their feet in football and see where we go from there. ... I think they want to concentrate on getting back to where they feel they should be."UNH coach Sean McDonnell talks about how much the series means to him as a former player who competed in it, but Scarano reports that UNH is, as the paper says, "close to working something out with Colgate and Lehigh," to fill the opening. If a game with Lehigh is scheduled the Morning Call's Keith Groller will likely get more evidence about the need for the Patriot League to move to scholarships if it wants to really compete in the NCAA playoffs.
The Daily Dartmouth has a look back at the Colgate game while the Daily Pennsylvanian has a look around the rest of the Ivy League.
Over at the Roar Lions Roar blog, Jake Novak puts the first week of play for Ivy League teams in perspective. We're on the same wave length for most of the games, but I'm not sure I buy his take on Stony Brook being a "bad loss," for Brown. Sure, a loss is a loss is a loss as Gertrude Stein might have said, but it was Stony Brook's third game and the Seawolves had played both Hofstra and Colgate tight – on the road. A one-point loss for Brown on the road against a team with a couple dozen transfers wouldn't be reason enough for me to drop the Bears in my power rankings. If I had power rankings ;-)
Speaking of power rankings, the FCS Coaches Poll is out with five of Dartmouth's opponents mentioned:
7. UNHThe Sports Network Poll lists seven Dartmouth opponents:
23. Holy Cross
30. Harvard
36. Penn
37. Colgate
6. UNHThe TSN poll is getting a little crazy when future opponent Butler comes in at No. 48. Butler is indeed 3-0 with wins by scores of 42-3, 49-19 and 42-21. But those wins have come over Albion, Franklin and Hanover, all Division III teams.
21. Holy Cross
29. Colgate
34. Harvard
35. Penn
59. Cornell
63. Yale
An Alert emailer sent along a note regarding yesterday's "Point After," reminding that in addition to a Timmy, the Dartmouth football roster includes a Robbie (Krattiger) and a Joey (Casey). There's also an Eddie (Smith), a Teddy (Reed) and a Tommy or two. But you get the point, so on to the next one ...
Point After
Five cars I would like to have if I ... a) had enough money; b) didn't live on a dirt road on the side of a mountain; c) had one iota of mechanical ability, which I most assuredly do not:
A vintage VW bug
A classic green MGB
A Mini-Cooper
A VW squareback wagon
A Jeep Willys window panel truck
Of course, we do have the one vehicle all of us wanted most and would never part with, our 1984 VW Westfalia pop-top camper, pictured here in Idaho during our cross-country trip. It sleeps two on the second floor and two on the first floor and features a sink, stove and fridge. And yes, we got that missing hubcap replaced ;-)
