Basketball Shocker

By now you've probably seen a report on the Internet or a crawl across the bottom of the TV screen that the tenure of Dartmouth men's basketball coach Terry Dunn ended abruptly yesterday, 13 games into his sixth season. The local paper has a story here. Whether he simply resigned or was forced to resign isn't completely clear.

As the Dartmouth beat writer for the local daily, I wrote about the job search that brought Dunn to Hanover and covered the team for one season before starting up Big Green Alert. The past few years I've done a number of stories with Terry, watched most of his home games and regularly stopped by his office to catch up. I can't speak to what went on behind the closed doors of practice or the locker room, but I can tell you Terry was always great with me, and I consider him a friend. It's a sad story, whatever transpired.

On the subject of basketball, the Charlotte Observer has a story about one that got away from the Ivies: 6-foot-10 Jake Cohen, brother of former Dartmouth quarterback Josh. The freshman center leads Davidson in scoring at 13.4 points per game. From the story:
Were it not for what Davidson accomplished two seasons ago, Cohen would be playing college basketball elsewhere . Likely Stanford. Or California. Or Penn.
Dartmouth quarterback recruit Cole Marcoux is slated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to be broadcast on NBC today at one. The website for the game is here. The roster does not appear to have been updated since his selection.

Now it's off to the Dartmouth Relays for a couple of stories I'm writing and to watch that certain Hanover High School senior. Later.
