Chuck Burton over at the Lehigh Football Nation blog writes about Dartmouth's decision to alter the no-loan piece of its financial aid policy. He writes:
Put it this way: your family is making six figures. Dartmouth wants you to pay to play football in Hanover, but you have to pay to go there. Harvard does too, but they pay your whole way. Where is he likely to go? Dartmouth had a tough sales job going in, now it's immeasurably tougher - especially if all seven Ivy League schools keep their aid packages intact.Discuss among yourselves.
If you were watching the Olympics last night, you saw Hanover High School graduate Hannah Kearney of Norwich, Vt., win the gold medal in women's freestyle skiing. Kearney, by the way, has a brother Denny, who plays ice hockey at Yale.
On the subject of skiing, the powerhouse Dartmouth team won the Dartmouth Carnival as it, "continued its dominance of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Carnival circuit, winning it's 13th straight team title dating back two years." (link)
Good thing the ski team is plowing people over because Dartmouth's sports teams are enduring a collective struggle of near historic proportions this winter. Not to rub salt in the wounds, but it is what it is, as they say. The men's hockey team is 11th of 12 teams in the ECAC (5-12-1, 7-17-1 overall) and women's hockey is 8th of 12 (8-11-1, 11-13-2). Men's basketball is 0-8 and last in the Ivies (4-18 overall) and the two-time defending champion women's team is 5th in the Ivy at 4-3 (9-12 overall). Women's swimming is 0-6 in the Ivy (2-11 overall) while men's swimming is 0-5 Ivy (3-7 overall). Men's squash is 1-4 in the Ivy (9-6 overall) while women's squash is 0-5 Ivy (3-8 overall).
ESPN just had a program piece about women's ski jumping not being allowed in the Olympics. Here's today's trivia question. What is the only state in the union that sanctions high school ski jumping?
The answer: New Hampshire. And yes, that includes girls' ski jumping. (story)
As part of Dartmouth's Winter Carnival celebration, the Polar Bear swim was held at Occom Pond. Here's a photo.
And finally, Apolo Anton Ohno is back on center stage at Vancouver, so this is as good a time as any to repost a video I shot back when that certain Hanover High senior (who right now is doing an alumni interview with someone from an Ivy not named Dartmouth) and her brother were much younger. It's only 15 seconds but be sure to watch it until the end. It still cracks me up!
