Local Knowledge

This is a fun look at Dartmouth alums will enjoy and prospective students might find interesting, although the references to pong and a certain movie might not be appreciated in the college's official circles.

Hearing the narrator pronounce nearby West Lebanon as West Lebanin – the way they say it around here – was the first hint that the filmmakers had "local knowledge." A little poking around revealed that the writers for the video were Brenton Rayner and Ben Matthies, both from the Class of 2010. This appears to be the only video in what was billed as Rusty's College Tours.

The Colgate football site reports that Ryan Vena '00, the quarterback who triggered the start of this era of Raider dominance, will play his 10th season of Arena football with the ArenaBowl XXII champion Philadelphia Soul.

When I was at the local paper I covered a Dartmouth-Colgate game in which Vena was a standout and wrote the headline: Vena, Vidi, Vici. Wouldn't you know it, a reader sent a somewhat condescending note informing me that correct saying is Veni, Vidi, Vici. I had to laugh although there was a temptation to respond in this manner.

We are supposed to get 5-9 inches of snow today with the storm turning to sleet and a good chance the roads will be ice-covered tonight. Most local schools have called off classes but with this being exam week, Hanover has plowed ahead (pun intended), much to the understandable chagrin of a That Certain Hanover High Junior.
