Comin' At Ya

The 2011 Dartmouth football poster is out with tailback Nick Schwieger (22), corner Shawn Abuhoff (8) and tailback Dominick Pierre (29) featured. Double click the photo to enlarge (and you should be able to click one more time at that point to supersize).

Kudos to someone with the time, the energy and the know-how to produce maps showing the what states are sending football recruits to the various Ivy League schools next fall. (It's all unofficial because the lists haven't yet been released.)

The map with dots for the hometowns of Dartmouth football commits can be found here. (Note: You might want to move the dot representing Lebanon's Cody Patch to the NH/VT border ;-).

Maps for each of the other Ivy League schools can be found here.

A chart with the unofficial number of Ivy League recruits from each state can be found here.

In case you are wondering, here are the states listed with double-figure recruits this year (unofficial numbers taken from the chart above):
  • California 30
  • Florida 22
  • Ohio 20
  • Illinois 19
  • Connecticut 16
  • Massachusetts 16
  • New Jersey 16
  • Texas 12
  • Georgia 10
Given where the best football talent in the country resides, I find it amazing that three schools don't have a single recruit from Texas, and one doesn't have a single recruit from Texas or Florida.

The Providence Journal reports that Brown will be playing another game under portable lights this fall. This time it will be against state rival Rhode Island on Oct. 1. It will be interesting to see how that game draws without the novelty of it being the "first-ever," and without the opponent being Harvard. Last year's night contest with the Crimson drew 17,360 to Brown Stadium.

The Yale Daily writes about Yale fullback Shane Bannon, the lone Ivy League draft pick. Said Bulldogs' coach Tom Williams:
“This validates our program in terms of two things: coaching staff and ability to develop players.”

Add Columbia football to the list of programs that found a way to raise money for a good cause with its Jacked for Jaclyn Lift-a-thon helping improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families

In non-football news, this from the Associated Press:
HANOVER, N.H. — Using the same approach he once used to treat tuberculosis in Peru, the president of Dartmouth College is leading a national initiative to reduce binge drinking: a learning collaborative focused on measuring what works in one place and sharing it elsewhere.

Thirteen other colleges and universities have signed on to the project that Jim Yong Kim announced yesterday, but officials expect to increase the total to about 20 before it gets underway next month. The project will bring together teams from each campus three times in 18 months to share their experiences and help one another test strategies back home.

And finally, Dartmouth athletics and baseball coach Bob Whalen deserve a huge thank you for letting the Hanover and Lebanon high school baseball teams play their game yesterday on Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The college has invited the rival schools to play one of their two annual contests at the facility for the past few years and it is a huge thrill for the kids involved, even if the closest they get to playing is warming up the left fielder before each inning. ;-)
