The Art of Football

Defunct mascots aside, I've always been struck by the design of this football program cover from the 1939 game against Stanford. The program is available on eBay. There's some background on the illustration here.

A little information on Dartmouth-Stanford:

The Dec. 2, 1939 game was played at the Polo Grounds in New York City before a crowd listed at 10,200. Stanford won the contest, 14-3, to finish the season at 1-7-1. Dartmouth, which had started the season 5-0-1, lost its third in a row to finish at 5-3-1 under Earl "Red" Blaik.

Here's the lede from the United Press story:
Stanford, the worst team the West Coast has produced in years, pulled the day's gridiron surprise by walloping the strong Dartmouth eleven 14 to 3 in an intersectional game played on a soggy field at the Polo Grounds.

Speaking of art, work continues on Dartmouth's Visual Arts Center ;-)

The view looking east down Main Street earlier this week.
From in front of the Lodge.
The Lodge is dwarfed by the construction.

The VAC as seen from the top of the home stands at Memorial Field.
