Many Happy Returns

When I saw Dartmouth corner and return specialist Shawn Abuhoff at graduation he told me he is working this summer for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Dartmouth Review has a quick blurb on the senior All-American that tipped me off to the video below, in which Abuhoff reveals a choice of pregame music that may surprise:

Unfortunately, searching failed to turn up a highlight video from last fall when Abuhoff scored four touchdowns (punt returns of 82, 76 and 41 yards, and a 56-yard interception), but his freshman highlights can be found below. He's wearing No. 27 not his familiar 8:

Find Abuhoff's updated bio here.

Speaking of updated bios, senior quarterback Conner Kempe's bio has been updated here. Did you realize he is sixth on the all-time Dartmouth career passing yardage list with 3,333 yards and has a shot at joining Jay Fiedler and Brian Mann as the only Big Green quarterbacks to top 5,000 yards? Fiedler had 6,684 and Mann had 5,912.

Quarterbacks ahead of Kempe on the list are Fiedler '94, Mann '02, Charlie Rittgers '06 (4,472), Mark Johnson '90 (4,413) and David Gabianelli '87 (3,424).

And in case you missed the link here several years ago, you can learn more about Kempe's frightening kiteboarding accident and his remarkable recovery in this short video.

Former Dartmouth defensive end Charles Bay and the US National Team learned their opponent for the world championship tomorrow will be Canada after our neighbors to the north advanced to the gold medal game with a 31-27 win over Japan. Check out Charles' sack at the 1:32 mark of this video:

It's been a banner few months for Dartmouth rugby coach Alex Magleby '00. First he led the Dartmouth Sevens to the national championship and now he's guided the All Americans to a couple of wins over New Zealand Universities in California. Magleby's team has already clinched the three-match series against the traditional rugby power with the final match set for Saturday at Stanford. There's a game story here.

It's a Chamber of Commerce day in the Upper Valley with crystal clear blue skies and the air a crisp 53 degrees this morning when I drove Mrs. BGA to the Lebanon Airport. She won a round-trip ticket to New York City in a drawing at a Dartmouth basketball game last winter and is using it to catch a show – Jersey Boys I think – and shop (gulp!) with her sisters from just outside of Princeton and Massachusetts. Granted, the Cape Air plane she flew on was small but yikes: She was the only passenger! And the really sad thing about that for the small airline is that, yup, she was a freebie.

A reminder that signups have begun for Big Green Alert premium 2011. There's a blurb below but it left out one potential new feature this year. No decision yet about how frequently it will be updated, but your subscription will include the Green Alert Podcast discussing Dartmouth football, Ivy League football and sundry Dartmouth sports.
