Waiting And Watching

Awaiting news on that first night game at Memorial Field is getting to be a little like waiting for that puff of white smoke at the Vatican. You keep looking and looking but don't see anything. The word out of Hanover during the week was that an announcement could have come as early as this week but that, apparently, went up in smoke.

The Penn website still shows times for every game this fall except Dartmouth, which is listed as TBA.

The Dartmouth website is hedging its bets with times for eight games but TBA for Penn and Colgate, the likely choice to be offered a night game should Penn not agree to play under the lights.

The Colgate website lists the game at Dartmouth as a 1:30 start.

Dartmouth coaching legend Bob Blackman gets a brief mention in a Long Beach Press-Telegram story about a track coach at Duke. The story begins this way:
Long Beach's coaching family tree may be planted in the West, but a branch or two have managed to spread to all parts of the country.

Bob Blackman, a Poly High star on its 1936 football team, eventually became the head coach at Dartmouth, which is some serious ivy in college football terrain.

There are just three-and-a-half weeks until Dartmouth kicks off the preseason. I haven't seen anything yet about when non-conference opponents Colgate and Holy Cross report, but it's got to be pretty soon because their Patriot League rival Bucknell starts preseason practice one week from tomorrow. link

A Dartmouth engineer is involved in development of an "intelligent mouthgard" that will help measure "concussive-type blows." The South Bend Tribune reports that some Notre Dame players will use the mouthguards this year.

I'll be working the Tommy Keane Invitational golf tournament at Hanover Country Club all day today. By the way, the official announcer for the event is former Dartmouth athletic director Seaver Peters, whose sons Scott and Mike have teamed up to win the event six times in its 36-year history.
