A former director of football operations at Dartmouth used to put together a "helmet schedule" featuring all eight Ivy League teams and three non-conference opponents. He's gone but a nice Ivy-only helmet schedule can be downloaded from the Harvard WHRB radio website here.

Maybe it's a good thing New Hampshire isn't on the Dartmouth schedule this fall. In the Blue-White game across the state UNH quarterback Kevin Decker completed 18-of-20 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. (link) Gotta think UNH defensive coordinator John Lyons, the head coach when Dartmouth went 10-0 in 1996, wasn't terribly happy. UNH opens one week from tomorrow at Toledo.

OK, this is a strange one. The Beyond Sports Network has named an All-America team that features players from the FCS, Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The only FCS players to make the first team offense were an offensive lineman from Jacksonville and a placekicker from Montana. Meanwhile the starting quarterback is from Minnesota Duluth, the running backs are from NAIA Bethany College and Northwestern College, and a wide receiver is from Ottawa University. Heck, the second-team All-America preseason quarterback is from Vermont Division III novitiate Castleton State.
Maybe this from the website explains things: "ALL athletes that would like to be considered for the BSN 2011 All American Team can create a profile on the BSN College Network."

We spent the final night before football season takes over my world down in Manchester watching the Class AA Fisher Cats skunk the Trenton Thunder, 9-1. And I do mean skunk.
Watching the ball became secondary to a great many in the crowd in the latter innings as a black-and-white critter snuck onto the warning track in center field and spent the better part of the last two innings roaming back and forth against the wall. Between pitches the outfielders kept a wary eye on the skunk while many of us in the stands were rooting hard for long fly balls or liners in the gap. In fact, two relatively long flies did send the outfielders in the direction of the animal and the centerfielder finished the game holding his nose.

And finally, for those of you keeping score, That Certain Hanover High Senior earned his keep on the golf course during tryouts the past couple of weeks. He didn't want to be one of those kids who make the varsity just because they are seniors and he didn't have to worry as he proved he belonged with a streak of scores that should position him squarely in the middle of the powerhouse Hanover lineup.
That Certain Hanover High Grad, meanwhile, has been pleased with how her balky knee has come along. Although she wasn't able to run as much as she would have liked this summer, she was aggressive in her cross-training and is just about back to the mileage she hoped to be running with report-date for cross country just over a week away.
