From Coast To Coaster

Thousands of coasters have been distributed to restaurants in the Upper Valley promoting Saturday’s game at Memorial Field as part of a multifaceted marking blitz. ... Popping up all around town are stick-in-the-ground, election-type signs that cleverly refer to the game as Dartmouth After Dark.

Dartmouth's game notes for Saturday Night's nationally televised game against Penn have been posted here.

Talking about Dartmouth, Penn coach Al Bagnoli tells the Philadelphia Inquirer:
"This is the season they were really trying to play to. They have 25 or 30 seniors who are first or second on the depth chart. They are a little like we were last year. They have an exceptionally large senior class. They've got maturity and experience, and they've got some playmakers."

The Dartmouth-Penn game is a pick 'em according to the offshore wise guys.

The Ivy League playoffs start Saturday night for Dartmouth and Penn? A Daily Pennsylvanian columnist makes the case.

The DP blog The Buzz debates whether Penn needs to rethink its quarterback situation.

New Jersey.com has a story about parity in the Ivy League's Year of the Quarterback, which might be overhyped if the early returns are any indication of what's to come.

Craig Haley of The Sports Network picks Dartmouth over Penn. His other Ivy picks:
  • Columbia over Princeton
  • Rhode Island over Brown
  • Cornell over Wagner
  • Harvard over Lafayette
  • Lehigh over Yale
and . . .
  • New Hampshire over Holy Cross
  • Fordham over Colgate
  • Central Connecticut over Sacred Heart
Craig was 5-2 last week picking games including Dartmouth and its opponents.

Colgate's Nate Eachus is expecting to play this week after what he now confirms was an abdominal strain that kept him out of the Dartmouth and Towson games the past two weeks. link

Now it is USA Today's turn to write about Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson, son of the late Dartmouth standout Harry Wilson.

Dartmouth's endowment rose 18.4 percent last fiscal year. The Daily Dartmouth reports.

Weather permitting it is Senior Day for That Certain Hanover High golfer who is hoping to "go low" and claim a spot in the upcoming state championships. That Certain Hanover High Graduate, meanwhile, is excited to once again be part of the Big Green Readers.

And finally, this from last night's Green Alert premium . . .

Buddy Teevens and Scott Shulman with Dartmouth's version of Herbie

Parked on the track alongside Leverone Field House at the start of practice where the players could see it as they made their way onto the field Wednesday was a white VW bug featuring a large Dartmouth “D” on the hood and two pairs of parallel stripes running outside the letter, just as on the Big Green helmets.

The car was the brainchild of Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens, with help from a Big Green parent who runs a dealership.

Teevens explains: “I was riding my bike this summer and I saw a cream-colored Volkswagen come by. I don’t know why, but it just entered my mind that it looked like a Dartmouth football helmet. So I bounced the idea off Scott Shulman at Best Chevrolet and he found one. He painted one up and striped it up and brought it up. It’s a neat little conversation piece.

“The kids walked by and they just started laughing. It’s kind of an interesting thing, but people know what it is. There’s no mistaking it. You look at the front end going by you and say, ‘What was that?’ Then you see the back end and it’s almost identical. Scott really did a nice job with it. Hopefully people will enjoy and get a kick out of it, especially people of around this area.”
