Officially Speaking

I've never gone to a basketball game to watch the officials, but the plan this winter was to catch a game over in Vermont to see Dartmouth football equipment manager Steve Ward run up and down the court in a striped shirt and maybe razz him a few times. I don't remember what came up that caused me to miss the game I had hoped to see . . . but now I'm doubly-disappointed. Given the story in the local daily this morning, the newly minted rock star's games may all sell out next year ;-)

OK, I'm just kidding about the last part, but there was a very nice story in the paper today about Steve being the "co-recipient of the inaugural Darrell Sawyer Best Official Award," as voted on by the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association at yesterday's VBCA Senior All-Star Games. It's a terrific honor.

The story mentions Steve played some jayvee basketball at the University of Vermont and notes his play for the Marines in the Armed Forces Sports League. Missing from the story was a mention of his stellar play for the Marines in another sport – golf. Ask him about it sometime.

The story also failed to mention his current role with the Dartmouth football team. Steve followed in the footsteps of yet another veteran of the military whose bark really was much worse than his bite: the inimitable Kurt Foshey. (I think that name will bring a smile to some faces, although I'm not sure ;-).

Here's a piece of trivia for you. Steve is the grandson of legendary Dartmouth coach Tom Dent, known mostly by newcomers for the log cabin on the rise above the Connecticut River at the edge of campus.

The New Haven Register's Portal 31 blog on Yale football has a post "Witt happy the focus is back on football," (you think?) and another on no fewer than eight former Bulldogs involved in a Pro Day.

A string from the Lafayette sports message board regarding football scheduling includes this curious back-and-forth:
All of the non-league "future opponent" games now have been pulled from the Patriot League web site. So there might be more home games than first thought.

And Big Ivy seems to be sending a message here as well.

Got my info from the Media Guide. I would think that would be pretty firm.
*
I agree. But the PL site had future Ivy games projected out several years, until about a month ago. Now they're gone.

One wonders.

So, lad, are ya thinkin' that scholarships have changed the "special relationship?"
In case you are wondering, here's the schedule they are talking about.
