Welcome

Dartmouth's video welcome to the Class of 2016:

During the video one student makes mention of The 50, something I knew little about until That Certain Hanover High Graduate started making sounds about wanting to do it. Turns out it is a continuous 24-30 hour hike that covers 53.6 miles from campus to the Moosilauke Lodge. Find a story from someone who did it (along with a photo take on our road) here.
Back to the video. Toward the end it becomes a "Come to Dartmouth" commercial, but it's too late for one potential Dartmouth student who has chosen to go elsewhere. Sam Shober, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker from Washington's Archbishop Murphy High School visited Dartmouth in late January according to the Seattle Times, but will attend Stanford as a preferred walk-on according to this report.
Oprah Winfrey's Oxygen women's TV network signing a deal to broadcast Ivy League football and basketball nationally? Someone on some message board will probably post it – that often happens with these things – but don't take the bait. It's the Daily Pennsylvanian joke issue. From the story:
The deal, which will carry eight Penn basketball games in 2012-13, was struck primarily on the basis of coach Jerome Allen’s good looks.

“We’ve done a lot of market research, and Jerome tested through the roof with our target demographic — lonely, middle aged women who spend lots of time with their cats,” said one Oxygen executive. “The Ivies were lucky that [Brown coach] Jesse Agel was fired. He might have been a deal breaker … but nobody wants to watch Brown basketball anyway.”
That Certain Hanover High Senior is flying out to Bradenton, Fla., this afternoon with the Hanover baseball team. The squad will play several scrimmages at the Pittsburgh Pirates' facility before flying back Saturday night. The quick down-and-back was planned long before anyone knew they would be able to use the fields here in New Hampshire this week.

Believe it or not much of the trip was funded by a mattress sale held in the high school gym. We all thought it was goofy too, but it was an unqualified success. If you are looking to raise money for a good cause, it works.

Hmm, with college costs mounting, maybe I ought to start selling mattresses up here in the boonies ;-)
