Ivy Race Takes Shape

And the winner of the Guess The Attendance contest was Tim Vorhies, who missed the actual attendance of 10,138 for Dartmouth's Homecoming game against Harvard by just four. The next closest was off by 38. Tim won a $100 gift certificate at Molly's Bar & Restaurant in Hanover. Congratulations and thanks to "Lucky Pierre" for sponsoring the contest!

Your weekly Dartmouth opponent roundup with a comment or two . . .

Cornell 37, Princeton 35
Jeff Mathews torched the Tigers with 525 yards through the air and John Wells booted a 23-yard field goal with 50 seconds remaining to hand the Tigers their first Ivy League loss. Mathews completed 35-of-51 passes with four touchdowns while Princeton's Connor Michelsen was completing 29-of-35 for 390 yards in a game where defense apparently was a dirty word. Cornell had two receivers top 200 yards. The game hinged on a forced fumble that gave the Big Red the ball at its own 29 with less than three minutes to play. Cornell put together an 11-play, 66-yard drive for the winning field goal.

Penn 20, Brown 17
Penn continues to live life on the edge, getting two field goals from Connor Loftus in the last 1:25 to grab a piece of the Ivy League lead along with Harvard and Princeton. Quarterback Billy Ragone's seventh career fourth-quarter comeback saw Loftus tie the game with a 45-yarder. Trevor Niemann's interception got the ball back for Penn at the Brown 44 with 1:21 remaining. Not surprisingly, 15-yard Ragone run started a drive that ended with Loftus' 30-yard field goal with 17 seconds left.

Columbia 26, Yale 22
With three quarterbacks sidelined by injury, tailback Tyler Varga stepped in at the position, running for 220 yards and three touchdowns and completing 1-of-4 passes, but his heroics were overshadowed by Columbia quarterback Sean Brackett, who hit 33-of-47 throws for 328 yards and two touchdowns.

Fordham 36, Holy Cross 32
A season to forget for Holy Cross saw Fordham's Carlton Koonce pound in from the 1 with 11 seconds remaining to cap a 78-yard drive that dropped the Crusaders to 1-7.

Albany 23, Sacred Heart 20
The Pioneers were on the cusp of a huge upset until Albany's Omar Osbourne broke a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:38 remaining. Sacred Heart turned to backup quarterback Luke Wischnowski, who completed 24 passes for 211 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Butler 31, Davidson 20
Trae Heeter burned the Wildcats with 231 yards rushing and Matt Lancaster added 277 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
