Didn't You Used To Be . . .

That Certain '14 had a gathering yesterday here on Moose Mountain for fellow staff members and volunteers with Dartmouth's SEAD program. From the SEAD web page on the Tucker Foundation site:
The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) program empowers promising high school students from under-resourced backgrounds to thrive in high school and college and provides Dartmouth students transformative opportunities for service and leadership.
Among the two dozen or so SEAD folks who made their way out here was former Dartmouth offensive guard Elliott Dial '08, who proved he could make a pretty mean salad. Chatting with Elliott while he sliced and diced vegetables, I learned he is now teaching and coaching at Loomis Chaffee in Connecticut. (LINK).

Elliot told me that as a teacher in Texas he coached against a certain defensive back that, to his surprise, he found at Loomis Chaffee when he returned to teach in New England. That DB? The Big Green's Josh Winslow '16.
Dartmouth product Kyle Hendricks has been named the starting pitcher for the North Division in the AA Southern League all-star game in Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday. (Thanks for the link!)

Hendricks is 8-3 with a 2.13 ERA for the Chicago Cubs' affiliate.

From another all-star game release:
Hendricks was recognized by the Cubs as their Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May and was awarded the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 3-9. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif. native was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2011 draft out of Dartmouth College. He was traded to the Cubs, along with teammate Christian Villanueva, for P Ryan Dempster in 2012.

Although we are just about a month away from daily coverage beginning, signup for BGA Premium, 2013 begins today. You can sign up at this link.

(PLEASE NOTE: If you had a subscription last year you do not have to fill out the form asking for your email and to choose a password. Your information will carry over.)

Here's the blurb on the Green Alert site that explains the who and the what:
Sportswriter Bruce Wood will be covering Dartmouth College football and Buddy Teevens exclusively on the Internet for the ninth consecutive year and it should be a lot of fun in 2013.
Prior to starting the most detailed coverage of any Ivy League athletic team he spent nearly two decades as the Dartmouth beat writer for the local daily, covering not just football but the entire athletic program.
A Big Green Alert subscription will give you access to the premium website featuring the same comprehensive writing and reporting that has earned Vermont and New Hampshire Press Association recognition in past years.
Every game, home and away, will be covered with a preview on Friday night, at least one story on Saturday night, a follow on Sunday, and the always popular Optimist-Pessimist on Monday.
Every preseason and fall practice session over the first eight years of BGA has been covered with a full-length story featuring quotes, and that will continue this year. Once again there will be two full stories on double-session practice days.
During the season there will be no fewer than eight stories posted on the site each week, with at least one full-length story posted every day from the start of preseason until the final game.
BGA also offers full coverage of junior varsity football, the early-decision recruiting class, the regular-decision recruiting class and spring football.
Stories on games and practices are posted the same day they occur.
The first BGA Premium story of the new cycle (not counting spring football) will be the day of the Ivy League football coaches media call in early August. Detailed previews of each Dartmouth opponent will be posted per this schedule:

  • Monday, Aug. 19 – Brown
  • Tuesday, Aug. 20 – Columbia
  • Wednesday, Aug. 21 – Cornell
  • Thursday, Aug. 22 – Harvard
  • Friday, Aug. 23 – Penn
  • Saturday, Aug. 24 – Princeton
  • Sunday, Aug. 25 – Yale
  • Monday, Aug. 26 – Bucknell
  • Tuesday Aug. 27 – Butler
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28 – Holy Cross

Practice coverage begins Aug. 28 and there will be at least one full-length story every day – that's seven days a week – until the finale against Princeton on Nov. 23.

PLEASE NOTE: If you elect the option to have alerts emailed when each story is posted, there is a limit of three addresses per subscription. Please be sure the people on the list actually want the daily email announcing a new posting. They seem to enjoy the stories but don't necessarily want their inbox flooded ;-)
