Editor's Note: In the interest of full disclosure . . . I freelanced 3-4 stories for each of the issues, including the story about Jimmy Johnson, and will have four more stories in the next issue, including another spun out of the football program.
Phil Steele's magazine has posted its FCS positional rankings. They are fun to talk about and help fill space until the games start, but here's the thing: Don't put too much weight on them.
While it's nice to see someone from your school listed, to rank the top 86 wide receivers or 57 safeties in the FCS is just this side of ridiculous. Or maybe just the other side of ridiculous when you notice that Butler's Brendan Shannon is the 38th-ranked receiver in the nation.
AND the 68th-ranked receiver in the nation.
Or that Penn's Sebastian Jaskowski is the 38th-ranked safety in the country.
AND the 53rd-ranked safety in the country.
In Steele's defense, that's a ton of names being listed and it's really, really easy to make mistakes. But it does illustrate that, perhaps after the top handful at each position, the ranking numbers aren't to be taken very seriously. Again, just being listed anywhere in the rankings is worth noting.
That said, warts and all, here are . . .
