Saturday Roundup

Stanchions for the new video scoreboard at Memorial Field
went up and work continued on Saturday morning.
Yet another reason why Ivy League football teams should be allowed an 11th game if not to go to the NCAA Tournament: Other sports have already started. Dartmouth field hockey opened at California, volleyball at Marist and women's soccer at Purdue on Friday and men's soccer opened yesterday against Holy Cross.

Football doesn't open until Sept. 21.
Watched a good part of the Holy Cross football game against Towson yesterday on the Patriot League's free video service. Later in the day I had the Bucknell-Marist game going and the Colgate-Albany game going at the same time.

Green Alert Take: It's been explained to me why the Ivy League is charging for the league-wide video service and to be honest, it's a very reasonable rate. But, and it's a huge but, no one is going to "just stop by" to catch some Ivy League action the way I did yesterday to check in on the Patriot League games.
In games featuring future Dartmouth opponents . . .

Butler 49, Wittenberg 24
story and stats
Butler built a 42-3 lead over Division III power Wittenberg before cruising to the easy win. Quarterback Matt Lancaster completed 13-of-17 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. With the game out of hand, he did not play in the second half. Leading rusher Trae Heater took a seat at the half as well.

Towson 49, Holy Cross 7
story and stats
The Crusaders were no match for the Tigers, who were coming off a 33-18 win at Connecticut of the FBS a week earlier. Playing without starting quarterback Steven Elder, the Crusaders were driving to get within a touchdown at halftime when backup Ryan Laughlin was intercepted at the 10 and the Towson safety ran the pick back 90 yards for a touchdown. Freshman tailback Gabe Guild looked good on the video, running for 59 yards on 14 carries. Mike Fess caught six passes for 81 yards for HC.

Bucknell 27, Marist 14
story and stats
The Bison jumped out to a 24-7 lead and held Marist to 39 rushing yards while winning their opener. Four-year starting quarterback Brandon Wesley was a very efficient 12-of-16 for 176 yards with two touchdowns. Matt DelMauro, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, looked elusive on video while running 20 times for 83 yards.

Elsewhere in games featuring a couple of former Dartmouth opponents, New Hampshire, which used to make a habit of these things, seemed to be in good position to pick off another FBS upset when it took a 13-0 halftime lead and had a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter only to see Central Michigan roar back with 17 unanswered points to win on a 27-yard field goal with no time left.

Also, Colgate climbed out of a 30-14 hole and had a first down at the Albany 3 in the final minutes but got stonewalled on four consecutive running plays as the Great Danes survived, 37-34.

A couple more games of interest featured two other Patriot League teams. What was expected to be a very good Lafayette team was victimized by someone Dartmouth is all-too-familiar with as Keshaudas Spence gained 168 yards on the ground to help Sacred Heart to a 26-24 win. The Pioneers clinched the game at Lafayette with a 42-yard field goal on the last play.

Trailing by 20 points against Central Connecticut (a future Dartmouth foe), Lehigh scored three touchdowns in the final 10:46 only to miss and extra point and need two overtimes to pull out a 51-44 win.
It's an off day for the Dartmouth football team, the first of the camp. Check BGA Premium tonight for a column you may find interesting. I hope ;-)
