And In Other Vandy News . . .

Derham Cato
While the will-he or won't-he drama regarding Vanderbilt coach James Franklin going to Penn State rivets some people (notably a Certain Nittany Lion alum, a Certain Happy Valley sophomore and a Certain BGA Emailer) one thing is clear. Former Dartmouth defensive lineman and assistant coach Derham Cato won't be heading to State College with him in the coming days.

Cato, who spent three years as a graduate assistant under Franklin while working on his masters in organizational leadership at Vandy, is instead headed to Davidson, where he will serve as the Pioneer Football League team's offensive line/tight ends coach according to Football Scoop.

The move returns the Charlotte Country Day graduate to his home state of North Carolina.

In other news featuring former Dartmouth assistants, Gazettenet is writing that Don Brown will interview for the vacant head coaching job at UMass.

Currently the defensive coordinator at Boston College, Brown was the head coach at UMass from 2004-2008. Find his bio here.

Brown left his job as an assistant at nearby Hartford (Vt.) High School to begin his college coaching career at Dartmouth in 1982. He was the Big Green's defensive coordinator from 1984-86.

Prior to going to Boston College he was defensive coordinator at Connecticut and at Maryland. He also worked as defensive coordinator at Brown and Yale and has frequently been mentioned when Ivy League openings come up.

Brown is the second former UMass head coach said to be a candidate for the position. He joins Mark Whipple, a onetime Brown quarterback and head coach.
