One Of Two Against Five

The NCAA Division I board voted 16-2 yesterday to give the Power 5 conferences more autonomy. One of the two nay votes?

Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon. (The other was University of Delaware President Patrick T. Harker.)

From the Wall Street Journal (LINK):
The new leeway won't allow schools to give college players a paycheck or a cut of lucrative marketing and broadcast deals. It is limited to specific areas, such as loosening recruiting curbs, offering more comprehensive health insurance and letting schools cover the gap of roughly $2,000 to $4,000 between what a scholarship typically pays and the actual cost of attending school.
And this:
Mr. Hanlon, in an email following the vote, said the new structure threatens to "further escalate the arms race in college sports." He added: "The proposed governance changes move in the direction of even greater spending and revenue growth in intercollegiate athletics and even greater disparity between the conferences."

Green Alert Take: With the Big Ten being one of the power conferences, it would have been interesting to hear Hanlon's take if he were still at his last post as provost at the University of Michigan ;-)
From the Coaching Search website:
Per source, Virginia State wide receivers / recruiting coordinator Jerry Taylor has joined Buddy Teevens' staff at Dartmouth. Taylor previously coach at St. Francis and the University of Richmond.
Given that there's been no word of movement in the Dartmouth regular coaching staff but that the Big Green has been looking for someone to work offensive quality control (LINK), you can probably fill in his job title.
It helps when you've received an anonymous $100 million gift, of course, but the college has to be feeling a little flush. From Dartmouth Now: (LINK)
Dartmouth raised a record $287.2 million in philanthropic commitments in the 2014 fiscal year, which ended June 30, including $255.6 million in cash gifts received this year.

Just like old time! Former Dartmouth wide receiver Dave Shula (edge of frame) gets a high five from Eugene Teevens (bow tie and gummy worm). But instead of Eugene Teevens III (better known as Buddy) getting congrats after throwing a TD pass to his star wide receiver, this is Eugene V, looking pretty grom at IV's wedding!
The good news is that yesterday's violent, if brief, thunderstorms didn't blow out our TV or my computer or worse. The bad news? The second monitor for my computer is toast.
Awoke this morning to the sound of a large black bear knocking over our composting barrel and dragging it into the woods. He eventually ambled up our side yard and across the front before re-entering the woods. (A neighbor recently chased a bear out of her mud room, so this visit could have been more exciting ;-)
