Catching You Up On Your Reading

When Griffin the Wonder Pup brought me outside for my morning walk here on Moose Mountain it was 10.4 degrees below zero. That was fine, but it's supposed to get cold the next few days. Depending on which forecast you believe we could hit 20-below for the first time this winter over the weekend.
Three stories from their local papers today about incoming Dartmouth freshmen: California linebacker Jake Moen, Nevada defensive lineman Jackson Perry and Maine tight end Kevin Barrett.

From the Gilroy Dispatch signing day story on Moen:
“You come to these things and a lot of times it’s about football and what kind of football player he was and that has a lot to do with where he’s going and what he’s doing, but more to that is the things that he’s done off the field,” Cougar coach Tim Pierleoni said. “I’ve never seen Jake fail and I believe that this is one of those times he’ll rise to the top.”
Moen has been a Cougar force since called up to varsity in the eighth game of the season his freshman year. He racked up 613 tackles in his prep career—a record Pierleoni said no one will ever come close to breaking.

A Las Vegas Review-Journal story about Perry bidding for the Nevada Division I wrestling title quotes assistant coach Todd Prace:
“Jackson Perry has to be one of the most level-headed athletes we have on the squad. His dedication and willingness to sacrifice for the team makes him bar none one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached. He brings an attitude with him from the football field that really make the other athletes in the wrestling room look up to him. They see him as the leader of the team.
“And as a coach, we’ve learned a lot from Jackson Perry. There are not a lot of athletes like him, who come early, stay late and push the other kids past the point of exertion. That makes us want to be better coaches

From the Seacoast Online story on Kevin Barrett's commitment:
“I went to Dartmouth on my visit and it was just a special place,” said the 6-foot-6, 217-pound Barrett. “I was talking to a lot of other schools, but I went to Dartmouth and they were a family. It helps they are good, too. Dartmouth is Dartmouth. You can’t say no to Dartmouth.”
