Penn Is Mightier

First things first. A hearty congratulations to the Penn football team for its stunning, 24-13, road win over No. 4 Villanova last night. That result is a feather not just in the Quakers' cap but in the entire Ivy League's cap.

There will be naysayers who point to the absence of Villanova quarterback John Robertson – last year's Walter Payton Award winner as the top player in FCS football – and surely he was missed. But Villanova was still a formidable opponent that Penn dominated out of the gate. The Quakers held the ball for 24 minutes and 25 seconds of the first half to Villanova's 5:35 on the way to building a 17-0 lead. And when the Wildcats were threatening down the stretch, Penn responded. From Craig Haley's STATS story:
An upset happened as Villanova was mistaken-ridden, including three turnovers and 11 penalties. Its bid for another fourth-quarter rally ended when, trailing 17-7 and nearing the Penn end zone, running back Javon White fumbled at the Quakers' 6 and linebacker Donald Panciello returned the recovery 90 yards for a touchdown with 6:46 left.

Dartmouth wide receiver/return specialist Ryan McManus is one of 135 semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which combines academics, community service and performance on the field, and is sometimes referred to as the "Academic Heisman." Find a Dartmouth release HERE.

The Ivy League is well represented among the semifinalists with Brown receiver Brian Strachan, Harvard offensive lineman Cole Toner, Princeton linebacker Matt Arends and Yale quarterback Morgan Roberts also on the list.
The Georgetowner has a selection of about two dozen photos from the Dartmouth-Georgetown game. There are some very nice pictures of Dartmouth players. Check the pix out HERE.
From the Harvard Crimson Ivy preview on the eve of the Brown-Harvard game:
In years past, the road to an Ivy League championship for the Crimson has often gone through Princeton. But this season, in addition to what will inevitably be a high-stakes showdown with Yale, the biggest game may come under the lights at Harvard Stadium against Dartmouth in week seven.
“If they stay healthy, (these) will probably be the best Dartmouth and the best Yale teams we’ve seen in at least the last 15 years,” (Harvard coach Tim) Murphy said.
Have you ever wondered what a vendor at a major college football venue can earn in a day? At Penn State's 106,572-seat Beaver Stadium a lemonade vendor (on a warm day ;-) walks almost five miles up and down some very serious steps, but earns a lot more than you might believe. Certainly more than I ever expected. Find out how much HERE.
BGA is a day late on these but Dartmouth football has joined the Throwback Thursday movement. Here's the first installment:
