Saturday Wrap

A look back at a windy (and Dartmouth fans would say wonderful) Saturday around the Ivy League:

Penn 35, Harvard 25
Sophomore receiver Justin Watson caught seven passes for 149 yards including a 68-yard touchdown and ran five times for 100 yards including a 79-yard touchdown as the Quakers (5-1 Ivy, 6-3) jumped out to a 21-6 first-quarter lead, gave it back in the second quarter and then won the game with a 14-0 second half. Harvard (5-1, 8-1) had a 24-17 advantage in first downs but turned the ball over three times (two fumbles and one interception) while Penn did not give it away at all. Alex Torgersen was 17-of-26 for 245 yards with two touchdowns for the Quakers, who ended Harvard's 22-game winning streak and moved into a tie with the Crimson and Dartmouth for the Ivy League lead. Just 10,122 turned out for the game at Harvard Stadium.

Yale 35, Princeton 28
Dale Harris, a defensive back until last week when injuries forced him to switch sides of the ball, carried 30 times for 177 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs (3-3, 6-3) won a wild back-and-forth affair with the Tigers (2-4, 5-4) before 11,623 in Princeton. Trailing 14-0 early, Yale took a 24-21 lead late in the third period but fell behind 28-24 by the quarter's end. A field goal early in the fourth drew the Bulldogs within 28-27 before Morgan Roberts hit Robert Clemons with a 19-yard TD pass and they added the two-point conversion with 4:31 remaining to go up seven. Princeton's bid to retake the lead ended on an interception at the Yale 44 and the Bulldogs ran the clock out.

Cornell 3, Columbia 0
The Big Red (1-5, 1-8) got a 35-yard field goal on its first possession of the game and somehow pitched a shutout despite 151 rushing yards from Columbia's Cameron Molina to end a nine-game losing streak dating back to the Columbia game a year ago. Columbia (1-5, 2-7) had a 44-yard field goal attempt to tie in the fourth quarter come up short with 5:07 left. The two teams combined for just 83 yards through the air on a windy day with 3,233 looking on in Ithaca. The Lions suffered two interceptions and lost a fumble while Cornell did not have a turnover. Columbia lost despite running for 260 yards.

Fordham 38, Georgetown 31
After the Hoyas (2-3 Patriot, 4-6) tied No. 16 Fordham (5-1 Patriot, 9-2) with a field goal with 5:17 remaining in the game the Rams responded with a 76-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard touchdown run. Georgetown quarterback Kyle Nolan threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off twice. The game drew 2,219 at Georgetown.

Sacred Heart 28, Bryant 19
Bryant (3-2 NEC, 5-5) dominated the statistics – including two that proved costly in their loss to the Pioneers (2-3 NEC, 5-5). The Bulldogs took an early 10-0 lead but tossed five interceptions and committed nine penalties before a home crowd of 3,426. Down 21-10 to start the fourth quarter, Bryant used a field goal and a touchdown run to make it 21-19 but then missed the two-point conversion to tie.

Wagner 28, Central Connecticut 7
The Seahawks (1-4 NEC, 1-9) ran out to a 28-0 lead to win their first game of the year in convincing fashion before 2,010. Wagner ran for 316 yards and picked off four Central Connecticut (3-3 NEC, 4-7) passes.
