In Defense Of McNamara

Joining Harvard quarterback Scott Hosch as a Bushnell Cup winner yesterday was Penn linebacker Tyler Drake, selected as the defensive player of the year in the Ivy League.

Drake was a deserving winner. But a BGA reader made some good points in support of Dartmouth linebacker Will McNamara. Expanding on his email:

• McNamara was arguably the top player on indisputably the best defense in the Ivy League, and perhaps the nation.

• Drake was the best player on a Penn defense that surrendered 40 or more points three times, while McNamara was the best on a Dartmouth defense that gave up a season-high of 20 points.

• McNamara was the lynchpin of a defense that held seven of 10 opponents to one touchdown or less while the Penn defense held just two opponents under 20 points.

• Because a Dartmouth defense that allowed just 10.1 points per game was so dominant a Big Green defender had fewer opportunities for sacks and tackles for loss than someone on a Penn team that allowed 26.8 points per game.

A Daily Pennsylvanian columnist makes the case for breaking the tie atop the Ivy League. He doesn't explain how.

Waited until the last minute to cast my Heisman vote. I've had a vote for a lot of years and this was one of the toughest choices I've had to make. Per Heisman rules, I'll let you know how I voted after the announcement this weekend.
