Week Two Wrap

Yale 30, Cornell 24
On a day when running back Zane Dudek was held in check (12 carries, 33 yards) Yale took the wraps off freshman Spencer Alston, who carried 18 times for 120 yards as the Bulldogs held on for the win. Alston's four-yard run with 3:14 remaining turned a tenuous 23-21 lead into a more comfortable 30-21 advantage. But a 41-yard Nickolas Null field goal gave Cornell life that was finally extinguished when the Bulldogs recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. Perhaps surprisingly, given the teams' recent history, Yale had just a 145-143 advantage in rushing yards. Kurt Rawlings was 18-for-25 for 283 yards through the air for the Bulldogs. Cornell seems to have gone away from its three-quarterback system as Dalton Banks threw all but one Big Red pass, going 16-for-23 for 152 yards with one touchdown. Attendance was 11,400.

Penn 30, Lehigh 10
Karekin Brooks carried 16 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns to torch the Mountain Hawks for the second year in a row. Last fall he had 263 yards against Lehigh. As a team Penn piled up 294 rushing yards without a single tackle for loss. Quarterback Ryan Glover was 16-for-31 for 206 yards for the Quakers, who racked up 500 yards of total offense. Attendance was 4,445.

Princeton 51, Monmouth 9
Quarterback John Lovett was 21-of-27 for 332 yards with five TD passes and ran eight times for 71 yards and another touchdown as he helped the Tigers hit the 50-point mark in their first two games for the first time since ... wait for it ... 1886. Stephen Carlson caught 11 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and Jesper Horsted eight for 150 and three scores. The Tigers had 332 passing yards and 283 on the ground while outgaining the Hawks, 615-337. Attendance for the first game pitting the two New Jersey schools against each other was 11,068.

Columbia 23, Georgetown 15
With Dillon Davis stepping in at quarterback the Lions jumped out to a 23-0 lead, saw the Hoyas close to 23-15 with five minutes left, and then had to make a stop after Georgetown earned a first-and-goal at the nine to lock up the win. Dillon Davis passed for 201 yards but was intercepted three times by the Hoyas as he made his first start. With standout receiver Josh Wainright lost for the season, Ronald Smith stepped up and caught seven balls for 113 yards and one TD for the Lions. Attendance was 1,865.

Sacred Heart 41, Wagner 14
Kevin Duke was 17-for-29 for 322 yards and four touchdowns without an interception for the Pioneers. Naseim Brantley, a 6-foot-4 freshman making his first appearance, caught three passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns for SHU. Attendance was 3,178.

FRIDAY NIGHT
Harvard 31, Brown 17
The Crimson (2-0) jumped out to a 24-3 lead by halftime last night only to see the Bears (0-2) close to 24-17 early in the fourth quarter. Suddenly in a game, Harvard woke up and proceeded to march 87 yards in 14 plays, using a whopping 8:05 off the clock to put the game away on a 22-yard touchdown strike from Jake Smith to Adam Scott. Smith finished 23-of-30 for 251 yards with two touchdowns but also two interceptions. Michael McGovern was 22-of-43 for 293 yards for Brown, also with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Crimson outrushed the Bears, 237-32. Attendance under the lights at Brown Stadium was listed at 9,309.
