The 'Newspaper of Record' And Dartmouth Football

A New York Times story headlined, The Ivy League Becomes the Future of Football, focuses on the advances Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens and the conference have promoted to make the game safer.

From the story:
Teevens drew a parallel to when President Theodore Roosevelt (Harvard class of 1880) convened a White House meeting with college sports officials, including Harvard’s and Princeton’s coaches, to address football safety. One solution they came up with was allowing the forward pass.
“Here we are, the petri dish,” he said, “doing some stuff that maybe other people will feed off of.”
And this:
“Will it save the game of football?” Teevens said. “I don’t know. But I think it’s a step in the right direction.”
The Dartmouth also has a story that reviews some of the innovations that Teevens has brought to Dartmouth. (LINK)
The local Valley news has a notes column that opens with a look at the nearly unprecedented lack of injuries on this year's Big Green. (LINK)
The Boston Globe has a preview of Saturday's game under the headline, Harvard runs headlong into another Ivy League power in Dartmouth. From the story:
Harvard (3-3) will travel up to “the woods” Saturday for another Ivy League matchup, taking on an unbeaten Dartmouth squad (6-0) that coach Tim Murphy calls the best Big Green edition he has seen in his 25 years in the league.
“No distinguishable weakness,” said Murphy. “Buddy Teevens has done a tremendous job putting this particular class and squad together.”
And this:
It would not be a surprise if the Big Green defense — ranked No. 1 in FCS — is able to stuff the run. So the big plays for Harvard will more than likely need to come through the air.
Green Alert Take: Given the dire weather forecast – cold, rainy and windy – that's a big uh oh.
In the Harvard Crimson coach Tim Murphy takes the unusual step of comparing Dartmouth and Princeton. From the story:
“I think Dartmouth’s the better team [between Princeton and Dartmouth],” Murphy said. “To me, when you have the dominant defensive team in the league, that has consistently been the ticket to winning an Ivy League championship, whether it’s Harvard or anybody else. They have three three-hundred pound, twitched-up defensive linemen. I can’t remember ever seeing that in the Ivy League.”
Green Alert Take: Bet your bottom dollar that Murphy would not have said that if he hadn't already played Princeton ;-)

Former Dartmouth offensive coordinator (and former Princeton head coach) Roger Hughes has Stetson as the most improved team in the nation so far this fall according to STATS. The Hatters were 2-9 last year and are 5-1 so far this fall. (LINK)
