One last mention about That Certain Dartmouth '14 and the government shutdown after speaking to her a couple of nights ago.

Back when BGA was just getting traction and TCD'14 was finishing middle school we took a family cross country trip in our '84 VW pop-top camper. At Grand Canyon we made the long hike to the bottom of the canyon (it was a lot longer coming back up ;-) and pitched our tent at the Bright Angel campground near Phantom Ranch.

At night we wandered over to a throughly riveting campfire talk given by a ranger named Pam. I don't know how many kids who listened to her memorable presentations were inspired to dream about a career as a National Park ranger, but I know of one for sure.

These days TCD'14 is an educational ranger who can impact young lives the way a ranger named Pam impacted hers. She's supposed to be spending her second winter working in and around Grand Canyon, where in some ways it all began for her. Instead she's in limbo.

When she made a Facetime call the other night she said she's done a phone interview for a job in the private sector and may be flying out for an in-person interview.

I can't blame her.

But I can't help thinking about the expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm she brings to her job, and about that young girl or boy whose path in life she could help shape the way hers was all those years ago if only the adults in the room would start acting like adults.
