We are headed up to the Burlington, Vt., area this morning delivering our 1984 VW Vanagon pop-top Westfalia camper to a specialist for a much-needed "soup-to-nuts" workup. For the past few years, since our dedicated VW mechanic passed away, we've been apprehensive about taking the camper too far from home. The idea is to make the van as trustworthy on the road as a 36-year-old vehicle can be for owners whose concept of auto mechanics begins and ends with a set of jumper cables.
The 90-plus mile drive up to Burlington will be by far the longest we've made in several years as our confidence in the VW waned. I freely admit some apprehension about how the van performs on the drive. Wish us luck and check in tomorrow to find out if we made it – or if we had to put our AAA Plus membership to work.
