In The News

The local daily has a story headlined Dartmouth quartet plays in Ivy League-vs.-Japan all-star football game with former offensive lineman Jake Guidone '21, who played last fall at UConn, the main focus. Find the story HERE

The University at Buffalo newspaper has a story under the headline UB football hauls in MAC’s No. 1 overall recruiting class for second consecutive year  that might just as well have been headlined, UB football hauls in Dartmouth tight end for second consecutive year. Following in the cleats of former Big Green teammate Robbie Mangas, senior Zion Carter is headed to the Bulls. The story includes this (LINK):

Another Ivy-Leaguer, Carter is nearly Gronk-sized — 6’6, 230 pounds. He adds an interesting wrinkle to UB’s offense, but he needs to develop.

Editor's Note: Dartmouth had him listed at 265 last fall.

More from the story:

Despite his physical gifts, Carter caught just one pass in 15 games at Dartmouth. But Dartmouth averaged less than 163 passing yards per game in 2022. UB averaged 40% more than that. Will the Bulls be able to unlock him?

Even if Carter’s just a blocker, the Bulls can still use his size in their high-scoring offense.

Green Alert Take: You can be sure Mangas will be following the Bulls this year for a couple of reasons. Not only will Carter be at Buffalo but his older brother, DJ Mangas, is the program's new offensive coordinator. (LINK)

Green Alert Take II: Apparently Buffalo liked what it saw of Robbie Mangas last fall enough that it is bringing in not one but two Ivy League grads for 2023. Also joining the program is Demetrius Harris, a safety from Cornell.

FootballScoop has a posting (LINK) that Dartmouth is looking for a . . .

. . . volunteer Strength and Conditioning/Sports Science interns for the 2023 Spring term, starting in March 27th and completing June 2nd. Applicants will work with 31 sports, including football.

Before you toss your resumé onto the pile, to be considered you . . .

Must be working toward CSCS or CSCCa certification and exhibit a strong desire to be a strength and conditioning coach.

EXTRA POINT
I've always liked Jean Shepherd's story in his book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash where he writes about reluctantly agreeing to Schwartz' plea to go on a blind date only to discover his date is beautiful. To his horror he comes to realize that he is the dismal blind date. (Read the short story HERE.)

I thought about that story yesterday while on my hike. Stay with me now.

See, for at least one-quarter mile – or maybe longer – there were fresh animal tracks perfectly following the trail I'd been hiking around the back part of what I call "the loop." Interesting, I thought, that this critter is using my trail.

But then it occurred to me. Perhaps the crew that cleared the trail down the back side of the mountain didn't dream up the route themselves. Maybe the trail was already there before they came along, meaning rather than critters following my trail, I was following theirs.

The things you think about in the woods!
