In The News

Toward the end of a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story headlined With NFL free agency looming, the Steelers have begun negotiations with cornerback Cam Sutton was this (LINK):

A new cap specialist

Before he rose to the general manager’s chair, (Omar) Khan made a name for himself as one of the NFL’s best salary cap experts and lead contract negotiators. Khan still plans to be involved in salary cap management, but Cole Marcoux has taken on many of the responsibilities Khan previously handled.

Marcoux, whose title is director of football administration, played football at Dartmouth for head coach Buddy Teevens, who gave Khan his first job in football when he was the head coach at Tulane more than two decades ago.

Cole Marcoux '14 came to Dartmouth as a quarterback and graduated as an All-Ivy League tight end. His official title in the Steelers' directory is Director of Football Administration.

Former Dartmouth quarterback Dan Rooney '12, is the Steelers' Vice President of Player Personnel.

Vermont's Seven Days has a story about Gesine Bullock-Prado, host of Food Network's Baked in Vermont, whose seventh book My Vermont Table: Recipes for All (Six) Seasons, is due shortly. From the story in Seven Days (LINK):

Raised mostly in Virginia near Washington, D.C., she had never been to Vermont before (Ray) Prado, a Colorado native and Dartmouth College grad, brought her to the Upper Valley for a football game.

Although his career was short-lived, Ray Prado '89, was a Dartmouth football recruit who now works as a television and film storyboard artist. BGA Premium had a note about him after one of his visits to practice and Dartmouth Alumni Magazine did a long story about him HERE.

In the first season of Bullock-Prado's TV show she had an episode titled, Baking for The Big Green that was promo'd this way:

Gesine Prado is making a big home-cooked meal for football players from her husband Ray's alma mater, Dartmouth College. While Ray shows the offensive line a few veteran moves in the backyard, Gesine bakes a Hearty Pork Pie with a Big Green Salad.

If Bullock-Prado's name is familiar it might be because you'd heard of her movie star sister ;-)

EXTRA POINT
The snow finally stopped – although there's another storm headed this way Friday – and we had some visitors. Yup, a peek out the window this morning showed the deer are back. Not sure if they were just pawing away to see if they could find anything to eat or were bedding down for the night.

Speaking of wildlife, I wish I'd had the camera running in movie mode yesterday when a dozen or more turkeys were foraging for red berries around and in our ornamental trees. I don't know about you but I've looked at our Thanksgiving turkeys the last few years and found myself thinking, "No way those things could ever fly."

They couldn't, but these wild turkeys were just about as big, and they showed themselves to be surprisingly fast  fliers.

Griff the Wonder Dog was staring them down (Golden Retrievers are bird dogs afterall) and when I brought him out the door (on a leash) they noticed him and took off. I've had a few turkeys on the side of the road fly over my car as I pass by or power their way up into a nearby tree. But these birds yesterday burst into the air and zoomed quickly – almost in formation – several hundred feet before roosting high up in trees alongside our field.

A little research revealed wild turkeys can fly as fast as 55 mph over short distances.

The things you learn here. ;-)
