Listen In

With Defensive Coordinator Sammy McCorkle serving as acting head coach this spring it's as good a time as any to get to know the former Florida Gator special teams ace who has been on the Dartmouth staff since Buddy Teevens' return to Hanover for the 2005 season. McCorkle joined former Florida Gator quarterback Shane Matthews two years ago on his "Pod Up" podcast and talked about his path from Florida walk-on to Ivy League coach. CLICK HERE to listen and watch.

Here are a few timestamps if you want so scroll ahead:

• 13:00 – McCorkle talks about how he came to Dartmouth with the thought to stick around for 3-4 years.

• 14:17 – The realization that the Ivy League has more talent than he expected

• 15:27 – McCorkle tells Matthews that Dartmouth has study halls because while the players are smart, the classes are harder.

• 15:13 – What was it like recruiting sons of former Gator players?

• 17:16 – Dart-MOUTH

• 17:35 – On what might have been a very short recruiting call from Dartmouth as a high schooler

•  18:15 – Sharing what the MVP is all about and the decision not to tackle each other

• 21:31 – Tracing the Big Green's practice philosophy to Steve Spurrier

• 23:11 – What he's like on a game day

• 26:16 – A favorite story about HBC (the Head Ball Coach) Spurrier

For a sense of McCorkle on the practice field, this is from six years ago but trust me, his coaching game hasn't lost a step since this was recorded:

EXTRA POINT
I had seen a TV commercial a few times during the winter with people driving off in a Rivian truck but didn't have a clue what it was for – and never gave it much of a thought – until we were arranging our trip last month to our camping hideaway on a cliff high above the Pacific Ocean.

The last piece we had to finalize was a car rental and holy moly, was that going to be expensive. That sent me Googling for "reasonable car rentals" and up came a link to something called Turo. Wait, I thought, didn't that have something to do with the commercial with the Rivian truck?

Yup. It turned out Turo is a deal where you rent a car (or apparently a truck) not from one of the major agencies, but from an individual. It won't be a new car like you'd find at the familiar airport rental desks, but seriously, who needs a car with just a few hundred miles on it?

After a bit of research we booked a sweet little Fiat like this one from Turo for significantly less than half the cost of the cheapest rental we could get at the airport.

Through Turo the owner of the car then sent us info on where it was parked on the street a mile or so from the airport. When we got there we found a lock-box on the window of the car that we opened to get the key. Inside we discovered a couple of bottles of water, two bags of trail mix and a package of gum left for us by the owner, and off we went. Two weeks later we dropped the car off where we'd found it, locked the keys back in the lockbox and flew home. We never met the owner or spoke to anyone to arrange the rental or return the car. Pretty cool . . . and economical.
