No. 1 In The Ivies, No. 5 In The Nation

This is one of a series of postseason graphics produced by Dartmouth social media and for most of us it probably "buries the lede." ;-)

The big 90.0 grade from Pro Football Focus means nothing if you don't understand the PFF metrics (which I certainly don't). The teeny numbers circled in green at the top mean more. They report that Dartmouth's special teams graded out as the most effective in the Ivy League, and fifth-most effective in the entire country this fall.

The awards season is upon us and while Dartmouth came up empty among the Payton and Buchanan finalists, five Ivy Leaguers and four more players whose teams faced the Big Green last fall got a mention. (None were invited to the presentation ceremony.)

Among the 35 finalists for the Payton, presented to the best offensive player in the FCS:

Jaden Craig, Harvard running back

Malachi Hosley, Penn running back

Jameson Wang, Cornell quarterback

Jermaine Corbett, Merrimack running back

Elijah Howard, Central Connecticut running back

Among the 35 finalists for the Buchanan, presented to the best defense player in the FCS:

Abu Kamara, Yale safety

Hayden McDonald, Columbia corner

Kimal Clark, Central Connecticut safety

Matt Jaworski, Fordham defensive end

And Columbia coach Jon Poppe finished ninth in the voting for the FCS  Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.

Green Alert Take: Poppe being voted ninth has to be a joke. Taking a team picked to finish last in the Ivy League and winning a share of the school's first conference title since 1961 is deserving of no less than a top-three finish, and Poppe would absolutely get my vote for national coach of the year.

In the Valley News Jim Kenyon, a former sportswriter turned columnist, takes Dartmouth and the Big Green football program to task regarding the recent fraternity hazing incident in a piece headlined At Dartmouth, 46 years after the release of “Animal House,” not much has changed.

EXTRA POINT

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" out our driveway. This was the view last evening looking toward the mountain where I try to hike most days.
