Worth Revisiting

A handful of emailers have shared a link to a story headlined Roger Federer’s commencement speech wasn’t just a viral moment. It was masterful about the tennis hall-of-famer’s address to Dartmouth graduates last spring. From the story:
By the next day, the speech was everywhere, viewed by millions. Its message struck a chord with people from all walks of life, transcending the annual inspirational platitudes that define commencement season.

Find the story from The Athletic HERE. (If you don’t have a New York Times or Athletic subscription, you can read outtakes from the story HERE.)

A couple of quick notes regarding Dartmouth football. . . .

You read here and elsewhere a few months ago that former Big Green running back Q Jones committed to grad transfer to Rhode Island. Jones reposted a Xweet HERE, that reads:

Former Dartmouth RB Q Jones (@KingJones____) remains in the portal — and it’s honestly surprising.

He’s a no-nonsense runner who consistently looks to maximize every carry with efficient, decisive cuts. The Fountain, Colorado native would be a strong, dependable addition to any RB room.

And there’s this from Dartmouth rising senior Will Dehmel, who has done a fine job covering Big Green football for The Dartmouth:

News from me: For the next 10 weeks, I’ll be covering sports at the @WSJ

Green Alert Take: Congratulations Will. You earned it.

And a little news out of New Haven:

Green Alert Take: The most interesting news out of the report is that quarterback Dante Reno could have four years of eligibility playing for his father at Yale after spending his redshirt freshman season at South Carolina.

The Off The Least podcast has a video interview with the younger Reno under the headline, Dante Reno: Why I Left the SEC to Play at Yale that you can access HERE.

The classic, ivy-covered brick front of Dartmouth’s football stadium will be looking out over a serious construction project per a release reporting that Crosby Street, which runs in front of the facility, will be shut down for at least a year starting soon after graduation. From a college release (LINK):

Crosby Street will be closed to motor vehicles beginning Wednesday, June 18, as Dartmouth prepares to install an underground distribution piping vault as part of its conversion from steam to a more efficient hot water distribution system for campus heating and cooling.

The complex project, expected to take 12 to 18 months, is the next phase of the decarbonization initiative of the Dartmouth Climate Collaborative—a $500 million effort with the goal of reducing campus emissions by 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2050.

Green Alert Take: Maybe, just maybe, the powers that be will realize life can go on if the street is closed, and after the work is done will know they can shut the road down five Saturdays each fall to turn it into a wonderful tailgating opportunity for Big Green football fans.

Also from the college release:

Several renewal projects are currently underway in Dartmouth’s athletics district to support both the decarbonization initiative and to help Dartmouth improve its compliance with Title IX, including at Thompson Arena, Lewinstein Athletic Center, Berry Sports Center, and Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse.

EXTRA POINT

If you’ve been a regular visitor to this site you know I don’t have a cell phone. It’s a choice I’ve made in no small part because I’m not sure I have the discipline to not continually check it.

The news out of Cupertino regarding the new iPhone almost – read: almost – tempts me to replace our landline with a cell phone because a good 95-percent of the calls we get on our home phone are from telemarketers.

The new iPhone functionality, apparently borrowed from Android, answers the phone without it even ringing. It automagically asks unknown callers who they are, and the reason for their call, and provides a notification with a transcription of the response, allowing the user the chance to answer the call or trash it.

Well done, Apple. But please know, I’m still not buying a cell phone. ;-)
