QB Chatter

Internet woes on the mountain this morning so we're coming to you from the postcard-perfect, one-room Etna Public Library where story time for preschoolers will be teeing it up shortly so I need to be quick ;-)
The Dartmouth has a story about the Green-White scrimmage. Careful on buying those tackle numbers because I know who was keeping them ;-)

The CFPA FCS Quarterback Award Watch List for the fall is up and Dartmouth will be facing a couple of the QBs who are mentioned.

No surprise that Cornell's Jeff Mathews is on the list. Barring injury he will shatter a great many Ivy League passing records this year as a senior.

Also on the list is Butler quarterback Matt Lancaster, the Pioneer Football League's offensive player of the year last fall.

And for those who regret the end of the series with Colgate, the Raiders' Gavin McCarney is on the list as well.

Conspicuously absent is a quarterback who doesn't have the numbers – except when it comes to Ivy League championship rings. That would be Penn's Billy Ragone. All he does is win.
Speaking of quarterbacks, the Portal 31 Yale football blog writes of the situation under center in New Haven:
Well, there’s really no news here. As previously reported, Eric Williams and Henry Furman are a notch above the rest of the group. That hasn’t changed. Expect Clemson-transfer Morgan Roberts to compete right away and be in that mix as well.
Roberts flirted with coming to Dartmouth out of high school.

Also getting a mention in the New Haven Register story is another Bulldog who very nearly ended up in Hanover. From the story:
All-Ivy League pick Tyler Varga took a pounding last year. The versatile Varga suited up at running back, quarterback and returned kicks for the Bulldogs.
So, as a precaution, Varga did not participate in any contact drills or the scrimmage. He did practice and take part in non-contact drills.
Yale, by the way, is playing Brown in a preseason scrimmage on Sept. 7. Dartmouth is once again playing Harvard in a preseason "game."

Green Alert Take: It's time for the silliness to stop. These Ivy League preseason contests might lead a cynic to suggest that the Ivy's ban on an 11th game is little more than grandstanding. Sure, the league can point at the schedules and say teams are playing just 10 games so all is right in the world, but the truth is they are playing 11 and not telling anyone.
CBS Sports' college football blog writes about the NCAA banning Twitter hash tags and URLs on football fields. Also from the story:
(A)dvertising on pylons (it must not extend more than three inches on either side!), the color of jersey numerals (they must clearly contrast with the jersey!), the size of towels (must be solid white and measure no larger than 6" x 12"!) and tinted eye shields (no longer allowed!). Also, cameras of all kinds are prohibited from team areas.
Green Alert Take: Maybe I'm feeling a little grumpy this morning, but the sense here is that the NCAA is looking out for itself rather than the schools and the athletes. Players are being paid, grades are being dished out for phony courses and the NCAA is making rules about advertising on pylons?
