EXTRA POINT
Mrs. BGA and I are well-matched. She can't carry a tune but knows the words to every popular song. Me? I'm OK with the tune but to Mrs. BGA's never-ending consternation I play loose and free with the lyrics.
I'm actually pretty good with old TV theme songs, however. When the TV world lost Mary Ann recently I found myself singing about "Gilligan, the skipper too. The millionaire and his wife. The movie star, the professor and Mary Ann."
And I've been known to sing a "story about a man named Jed." You know, the fellow who "barely kept his family fed."
Green Acres, Welcome Back Kotter and, yikes, the Patty Duke Show are on my Stuck Song Syndrome playlist also.
Recognize this one, which is a real oldie, as you can tell by the name of the airport and the Soviet leader mentioned?
There's a holdup in the Bronx,
Brooklyn's broken out in fights.
There's a traffic jam in Harlem
That's backed up to Jackson Heights.
There's a scout troop short a child,
Khruschev's due at Idlewild,
Car 54, where are you?
That has me thinking about my favorite TV theme instrumentals. Rockford Files has to top the list but Hawaii Five-O, The Odd Couple, MASH and Bonanza are right up there.
It's no accident that I didn't mention any current TV shows. We don't really watch 'em. Then again, the catchy, corny, kitschy theme song seems to have pretty much disappeared. I suppose it's no great loss but really, how much better can it get than . . .
Meet Cathy who's lived most everywhere
From Zanzibar to Berkeley Square (or is it Barclay Square?)
But Patty's only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights
What a crazy pair.
If you are of a certain age, good luck not humming these for the rest of the day ;-)
