Tee Time

From left to right: Kirby Schoenthaler ’15, Dan Rooney ’12, Will Guinee ’15, Pat Hand ’15, Sean Ronan ’15, Alex Park ’14, Garrett Schmidt ’15, and former Duquesne offensive lineman Matt Kikta, like Park a graduate of Upper St. Clair HS outside of Pittsburgh. (Click photo to enlarge.)

Golf and baseball were on the agenda this weekend as a group of former Dartmouth football players gathered to tee it up at Lindenwood Golf Club just south of Pittsburgh and then headed to PNC Park to catch the Pirates playing host to the Mets last night.

Schoenthaler, Rooney and Hand led the way on the course but the real fireworks came at night when the Pirates, once trailing 6-0, used a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 9-7 win over the Mets. The big question: Did the Dartmouth (plus one) group stick around for the dramatic end?

Our local daily has a story about incoming Dartmouth punter Davis Golick of College Park, Ga., and Woodward Academy. The Valley News story centers on his pursuit of a private pilot license and includes this quote about the first time he soloed (LINK):

“It was definitely crazy. It didn’t really hit me until I was done. While I was flying, I really wasn’t thinking about it. But once I was back on the ground and done for that day, that’s when I was like, ‘Oh my God, I just flew an airplane, all by myself.’ ”

The Valley News columnist has written a piece about a suspended Dartmouth student and football player that begins this way (LINK):

Hoping to put a quick end to a suspended student’s federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination during a sexual assault investigation, Dartmouth gave it the ol’ college try.

It brought in a so-called Biglaw firm from Boston to argue that the case should be thrown out for lack of merit.

U.S. District Court Judge Joseph DiClerico’s July 8 order dashed Dartmouth’s hopes.

And . . .

. . . Dartmouth is in the uncomfortable position of having to defend its actions in a student disciplinary proceeding that until now it could cloak in secrecy.

EXTRA POINT
I have to admit that during football season I'm envious of folks living on the West Coast who can watch an NFL doubleheader and instead of tuning right into 60 Minutes have a few hours to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

I'm getting a little feel of that this weekend with the Open Championship from Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England. I watched a bit of live coverage at 6 this morning and in a few minutes will head back to the telly to root on Jordan Spieth and smooth-swinging Louie Oosthuizen.

Unfortunately, while I'll be able to get outside after the last putt of the championship plops in the cup around 2 p.m. Eastern, it won't be sun I'm soaking up on my afternoon hike. The only thing I'll be soaking up is rain, which is putting a damper on yet another summer weekend.

Given that this post started with golf and ended with golf, I suppose it's as good a day as any to share a quick clip we received earlier this week from That Certain Nittany Lion '16. Visiting That Certain Dartmouth '14 and my sister in Colorado, he played The River Course at Keystone Resort and the gorgeous view while he hits his tee ball on the way to an eagle on the 18th hole shows why it was worth packing the golf clubs into the car for the long drive out.
