Disappointing

The news on the NFL front for Dartmouth alums is disappointing and promising.

The disappointing: Offensive lineman Matt Kaskey '19, was waived by the Carolina Panthers after suffering a foot injury in the team's exhibition opener against the Indianapolis Colts last week. From a Pantherswire story (LINK):

Carolina has announced they have waived/injured Kaskey, who sustained a foot injury in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. He did not return to the game and, according to head coach Matt Rhule, was likely not ready to hit the field again for this week’s activities leading to Saturday’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Kaskey spent much of 2020 on Carolina’s practice squad. He was called up to the active roster during the season’s final weeks and appeared in just one game.

Kaskey reportedly had been playing well and getting extra reps while linemen ahead of him were sidelined by injury.

The promising: There's nothing official yet regarding Niko Lalos '20, considered an "edge rusher" by the New York Giants. But at least one SI writer thinks the former Dartmouth defensive end, who had a solid exhibition opener against the New York Jets, deserves to stick around. From the posting (LINK):

I'm inclined to keep Lalos on the roster over rookie (Elerson Smith), who has missed a lot of time due to a hamstring strain and who I might consider moving to IR since players can be brought back from IR after three weeks.

Smith is a fourth-round draft pick from Northern Iowa.

Missed this last spring but the University at Buffalo School of Law had a story about former prosecutor Lisa Friel '79, a Dartmouth classmate of Big Green football coach Buddy Teevens, who now works as a personal conduct investigator for the NFL. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law (LINK)

Friel has come under scrutiny recently regarding her investigation of quarterback Deshaun Watson. (LINK)

Apple Maps as a feature that enables users to shift a satellite view image to 3D and I thought I'd try it on the Ivy League football stadiums. It worked to varying degrees with some distortion. Here's where Ivy teams will play this fall, courtesy of Apple and its 3D capability (click photos to enlarge):

EXTRA POINT
I'm a little sheepish about sharing this with our friends in the West, but we've had a pretty wet summer this year.

Fortunately for someone who likes to get the day started with an hour or so of brisk hiking early each morning, the rains have generally come overnight or in the afternoon. Only rarely has there been a morning when it was raining as I headed to the trailhead.

Walking Griff the Wonder Dog prior to my hike today I realized this was going to be one of those rainy mornings.

As I reached into the closet for a lightweight raincoat, I eyed my rain pants and thought to myself, "Someone really ought to invent rain shorts."

Then I thought to myself, "You are an idiot. Someone already did. It's called a bathing suit."
