Before And After Homecoming

A look at Homecoming from the Dartmouth football office:

Dartmouth's game at New Hampshire is the only one not available this fall on ESPN+, ESPNU or ESPN3. But a stream of the game is available on FloSports for a small fee. Plans start at $7.99/month, and given that you probably won't want anything more than this game, I pulled this up from the fine print in the FloSports terms of service:

The Star Tribune out in Minnesota has a story featuring two familiar names involved in the bid to rebuild the Macalester College football program. One is interim head coach Kijuan Ware, a Dartmouth assistant in the mid-2000s. (LINK) The other is Macalester athletic director Donnie Brooks, a popular assistant athletic director at Dartmouth from 2011-16.

The story notes that Ware has "served as an assistant coach at 11 colleges in 10 different states in the past 20 years."

From the story:

His list of coaching stops includes Georgetown, Dartmouth and Notre Dame.

Kijuan is an interesting guy. More from the story:

Ware majored in mathematics and computer science at Springfield (Mass.) College and later was named a Fulbright Scholar. He taught AP calculus and other advanced math courses in high school before choosing a career shift.

Headline in The Dartmouth: Dartmouth’s endowment posts 46.5% year-over-year returns, prompting additional spending on students. From the STORY:

(T)he College will eliminate the expected parent contribution for families making up to $65,000 when calculating undergraduate financial aid, according to the announcement. Additionally, eligible employees — those who were active on June 30 and remain active today — will receive a bonus equal to 3% of their base earnings in 2021 fiscal year by the end of the calendar year. Student workers’ hourly minimum wage will increase from $7.75 to $11.50 and graduate students who receive stipends will be awarded a $1,000 bonus.

And . . .

(T)he Wall Street Journal reported on Sept. 29 that other wealthy universities’ endowments are seeing growth comparable to Dartmouth’s endowment, and several — including Brown University’s at over 50%, Duke University’s at 55.9% and Washington University in St. Louis’s at 65% — surpassed Dartmouth’s endowment growth.

EXTRA POINT
The good news is on one of my hikes early last week I saw someone hanging yellow ribbons from tree branches and assumed he was marking the trail for an upcoming race so I eventually figured out what was going on.

The bad news? With sunrise getting later by the day my hikes have been starting in pitch blackness, which is why, when my headlamp illuminated something, I was startled. Startled, by the way, is understating it ;-)

I shot this photo Sunday of what startled me when I hiked later in the day:

With a little Googling I read this about the race, a 12- and 24-hour "ultra" that started on the far side of the trail, where it leads to a feature known as Devil's Den:

Though in 2020, the devil prevented anyone from getting the 100 mile buckle, it couldn't make anyone quit. In 2021, what tricks will the devil throw at you to try and make you quit? Not only will you face the devil, but you will face your darkest fears. Are you willing to to overcome not only the challenge of the race, but also overcome the darkest parts of your mind?
