Top-10

A loyal BGA reader was looking through the Ivy League football record book and was interested to see where Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens sits regarding most wins while coaching at an Ivy League school. Unfortunately, while the record book is listed as finally having been updated, much of it hasn't actually been updated including the MOST GAMES WON entry, which still lists Teevens as having 88 wins (he actually has 114) and lists Brown's Phil Estes as 1998-Present when he hasn't coached the Bears since 2018.

Out of curiosity, I updated the records. Here's how they stand now for all-time wins coaching Ivy League teams:

1. Tim Murphy (Harvard) 184-83

2. Carm Cozza (Yale) 179-119-5

3. Al Bagnoli (Penn, Columbia) 175-109

4. Edward Robinson (Brown) 140-82-12

5. Bob Blackman (Dartmouth, Cornell) 127-70-4

6. George Woodruff (Penn) 124-15-2

7. Tuss McLaughry (Brown, Dartmouth) 120-126-8

8. Joe Restic (Harvard) 117-97-6

9. Phil Estes (Brown) 115-94

10. Buddy Teevens (Dartmouth) 114-94-2

Here's the list for all-time wins coaching Ivy League teams since the start of formal Ivy League play in 1956:

1. Tim Murphy (Harvard) 184-83

2. Carm Cozza (Yale) 179-119-5

3. Al Bagnoli (Penn, Columbia) 175-109

4. Bob Blackman (Dartmouth, Cornell) 124-64-4

5. Joe Restic (Harvard) 117-97-6

6. Phil Estes (Brown) 115-94

7. Buddy Teevens (Dartmouth) 114-94-2

8. John Yovicsin (Harvard) 78-42-5

9. Steve Tosches (Princeton) 78-50-2

10. Dick Colman (Princeton) 75-33

Closing in on the Top-10 since 1956 is Princeton's Bob Surace, who is 65-45 with the Tigers.

Green Alert Take: C'mon Ivy League. How about really updating the record book? And while you're at it, a comprehensive table of contents would be nice.

From an Ivy League press release (LINK):

Brown senior quarterback EJ Perry and Princeton senior linebacker Jeremiah Tyler were announced as the Ivy League’s 2021 Football Players of the Year and Asa S. Bushnell Cup recipients at the famed New York Athletic Club on Monday, Dec. 13.

Green Alert Take: If they aren't going to broadcast or stream the presentation (if they did so this year I couldn't find it) the Ivy League might be better off announcing the Bushnell Cup winners on the same day they announce the All-Ivy teams.

The Boston Globe has a story about Brown quarterback EJ Perry that includes this (LINK):

“We had 31 of 32 teams come through, and a bunch of them came through multiple times,” said Brown coach James Perry, E.J.’s uncle. “I’ve coached other kids who had stints in the NFL, but I’ve never seen anything like this.”

One NFL scout compared Perry to Washington quarterback Taylor Heinecke, with “some magician-like qualities to his game.” Listed at 6-2 and 210 pounds, Perry threw for almost 6,000 yards and rushed for more than 1,100 yards in his two seasons at Brown.

“He’s fun to watch,” the scout added. “I could see some NFL coaches falling in love with the way E.J. plays the game and taking a shot on him in the mid- to late-rounds.”

EXTRA POINT

We put the 7-foot lighted star I built out in our field over the weekend and there's something about it sitting out there by itself on our quiet dirt road that, well, it works.

I just hope it keeps working. We never found out what it was, but I built a similar star when we lived on the shoulder of Moose Mountain and because it was unwieldy getting it in and out of our smaller garage one year I left it  out of sight in the woods. Turns out, some kind of critter must have been decorating its house because every single one of the old screw-in type bulbs was removed and carried away. The wires on each side of the bulbs were gnawed off, allowing the bulbs to be purloined. I searched the woods trying to find where they had been hidden to no avail and a naturalist friend, who has authored a number of well-received books on wildlife, simply shrugged his shoulders when I asked who he thinks might have been responsible.

I've always thought it might be raccoons. This web entry seems promising in that regard

Though raccoons are always foraging food, raccoons are attracted to shiny things more than food just like blue jays. These little masked bandits like shiny and glossy things ...  to attract mates, decorate their nests, beautify, and play with.
