Finally, Another Name

Names of football recruits are still slowly trickling in and sharp eyes found that Sean Ward, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end from Cleveland's St. Ignatius High School Tweeted last night that he's headed to Dartmouth. His Twitter (LINK) shows a preferred walk-on opportunity at Ohio University as well as offers from Denison and Clarion.

Someone recently shared a link to the full broadcast of the 1984 Dartmouth-Yale football game. Several points of interest:

• How far has Sean McDonough come? Back in 1984 he was the sideline reporter for Ivy League football!

• Even quarterbacks in '84 had larger shoulder pads than today's linebackers.

• It's nice to see Carm Cozza and Joe Yukica prowling the sidelines again.

• While attendance was already in retreat in the mid-'80s the folks in New Haven would gladly take a crowd like that for anything other than The Game. Doubtful there were 25,372 at the game as the official stats report but there were a lot more people in the stands than the 4,204 average last fall for games not against Harvard.

EXTRA POINT
In mid-December I ran two long stretches of orange extension cord into our field to power up the seven-foot star we put up for Christmas. It snowed a day or two later and the cord has been buried by as much as 18 inches or so of snow ever since. Until this morning, that is.

Drenching rain overnight washed away most of our snow, revealing patches of brown grass and the extension cord for the first time since it has been out there. After letting Griff the Wonder Dog out to do his business this morning (I wasn't going out with sheets of wind blowing sideways) I checked the temperature. It was 45 degrees at 6:30 a.m.

At a little before 7:30 I decided to go out and wind up the cord before we got snow again. I took one step outside and quickly turned around to get a heavier coat. The temperature was 25 degrees. That's right, in less than an hour the thermometer showed a drop of 20 degrees.

I did finally get the extension cord out of the field and just in the nick of time. With the ground absolutely soaked from the heavy rain, the cord was freezing in place as I wound it up. If I had waited another half hour I might not have been able to peel it off the rapidly freezing ground.
