Well Done

The Dartmouth College Fund's 1769 Society is "a community of generous alumni, parents, and friends who demonstrate the power of collective giving to make Dartmouth accessible for all students." (LINK)

Junior safety Sam Koscho '23 does a terrific job giving us an inside look at the life of a Big Green football player in this 1769 Society video posted earlier this winter:

BGA Daily posted on Friday about running back/athlete DJ Crowther of Christian Brothers in Sacramento choosing Dartmouth. (LINK) Now his school has put this Tweet up. (Yellow circle is mine ;-)

For those who are looking at this on a phone, it's the Dartmouth University thing again.

It's Super Bowl Sunday, but you probably already knew that, didn't you? Mrs. BGA and I will be watching the game (and the commercials ;-) here in our Vermont hillside home. In the past we've gone to parties at friends' houses and, to be honest, no one really seems to watch the game (or the commercials ;-) all that intently. Watching here is just fine with me.

That's all the football I have for today, but since I've got you . . .

With the Ivy League football season over I let my ESPN+ subscription lapse in early January, so I was using Siri to check on the Dartmouth basketball scores against Princeton yesterday. When I heard the men's halftime score I had a feeling of dejas vu. The score: Princeton 43, Dartmouth 13.

That sent me scurrying online where I found the halftime score of the women's game at Jadwin earlier this season: Princeton 45, Dartmouth 11.

The final of the men's game yesterday was 85-40, the team's most lopsided Ivy loss in 55 years. The women fell to the Tigers yesterday, 70-48.

Clearly, it continues to be a tough go on the hardwood for the Big Green. I had thought having a former basketball coach taking over as athletic director in 2010 and his decision to make a couple of head coaching moves would breathe life into the programs. But the struggles continue.

The women's team is 2-20 overall this winter and 1-9 in the Ivy League. The men's team, which has some promising young players, will graduate its top three scorers, its leading rebounder and three assist leaders. It has been competitive in the majority of its games but is still just 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

That's a combined 7-35 overall and 3-16 Ivy League record.

EXTRA POINT
Speaking of canceling my ESPN+ subscription, I heard on a podcast the other day about a "concierge" service for managing online subscriptions. It's not a bad idea. Most of us have a subscription or two or five and it's easy to forget about canceling those we no longer use, only to remember after they auto-renew for another year.

Several years ago when I was rebuilding the BGA Premium site I thought I'd found a more streamlined way to manage subscription signups only to discover – to my horror – that the service I was using renewed automatically. Once I realized that I junked the whole thing and went back to doing everything by hand. It's a huge pain and certainly doesn't do much for my bottom line – but hey, at least I can sleep at night ;-)
