Could Dartmouth be sending another grad transfer to Samford?

Tight end JJ Jones, who already had an offer from North Carolina Central, has posted grad transfer offers from Samford as well as Texas A&M Commerce in the last few days. Defensive lineman Seth Simmer had two solid years at Samford after graduating from Dartmouth.

Former Dartmouth defensive end Niko Lalos started the 2020 season on the New York Giants practice squad and finished it with the big team. Last fall he spent the entire season with the practice squad, and in January signed a reserve/futures contract with the team. What exactly is a reserve/futures contract and what does it mean? Here's one explanation (LINK):

First, (a futures contract) can only be offered to Street Free Agents (SFA) and Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) that are not currently under contract. An SFA is a player that had a contract with an NFL organization the previous season, but was not on an active roster when the season concluded (practice squad players are the most common to fit the criteria).

Second, a futures contract is typically a league-minimum deal with no guaranteed money in any fashion, so at any time a team wishes to terminate the contract they can do so without penalty.

Third, a futures contract does not count against a team’s salary cap until the league new year and free agency begins. This allows teams to pay players to retain their rights from January through mid-March, while also maintaining their cap integrity. When the new year begins, the contracts become traditional deals and count against the salary cap.

Keeping all that in mind, Lalos' previous contracts/earnings and his Futures contract for $705K are detailed HERE.

Welcome to March . . . and you know what that means. We can now say Dartmouth spring football begins next month! April 5 to be exact.

EXTRA POINT
As if the turning of the calendar isn't warning enough, a harbinger of spring was visible in our field yesterday as ATV tracks announced that the farmer up the hill's maple sugaring operation has kicked into gear. The farmer has a right-of-way to get to his sugar bush and will periodically cross the field and in front of our solar tracker in the next month or so. For the uninitiated, the sap runs best when nights are still below freezing and the temperature rises above freezing during the day.
